According to a 1995 study by the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NPCO), the majority of hospice patients were white--83 percent. Only 8 percent of hospice patients were African American and 3 percent were Hispanic. Many experts believe that cultural differences affect these numbers. "Contemporary medical models focus predominantly on the technical and financial aspects of care. WHO also noted that "it is the ethical duty of health care professionals" to alleviate pain and suffering, whether physical, psychosocial or spiritual and further supported an interdisciplinary model by noting the need for collaboration between professional palliative care providers and support care providers, including spiritual support and counseling"--
