Monty Roberts has changed forever the way we treat horses. This book may change the way we treat each other. Drawing on the experiences and wisdom gained over the decades in his groundbreaking work with animals, Monty Roberts applies that knowledge to the way we relate to each other: how we handle hierarchical power struggles, manage corporations and work with our colleagues, behave towards each other in our families, and raise our children. Rich in anecdote and by turns practical, philosophical and provocative, this landmark book bids us to rethink the way we use power over others, and makes the compelling argument that with humans, as with horses, the gentle way is the better way.

From the author of the #1 bestseller The Man Who Listens to Horses, a book for all of us seeking to strengthen our human relationships "Monty Roberts will make you marvel."—The New York Times Book Review In The Man Who Listens to Horses, Monty Roberts revealed the depth of communication possible between human and horse. Touching the hearts of more than four million readers worldwide, that memoir—which spent more than a year at the top of The New York Times bestseller list—described his discovery of the "language" of horses and the dramatic effectiveness of removing violence from their training. Now, the world's most famous horse gentler demonstrates how his revolutionary Join-Up technique can be used not just for horses, but as a model for how to strengthen human relationships. With vivid, often deeply moving anecdotes, Roberts shows how the lessons learned from the thousands of horses he has known can provide effective guidelines for improving the quality of our communication with one another—from learning to "read" each other effectively, to creative fear-free environments, and, most importantly, teaching belief in the power of gentleness and trust.

Can horses really teach us to be better human beings? In this groundbreaking work, you will discover that the answer is a resounding "Yes". While working with severely disturbed youths, therapists Adele and Deborah McCormick discovered the best healers were their herd of Peruvian Paso horses. Through their work with horses, the McCormicks' patients were initiated into the hidden world of animal energy and instinct, and found a safe and natural way to learn about their own dualistic natures. Patients learned to tap into their primal "animal" mind and energies and apply them toward more creative and responsible living. What took days or months to uncover in an office setting took onyl minutes when patients were on a horse. You will read case after fascinating case of people discarded by society and the psychiatric community whose lives were turned around by the intuitive guidance and friendship of their equine therapists. The use of horses in this book is for the sole purpose of analogy for human relationships. Horses are also my exercise, my fun, and my passion. The stories of the horses and humans are metaphorical to help teach couples better communication toward improved relationships. One day I was in Rhonda's barn, minding my own business, eating a taco on a lunch break when it happened. There were three stallions, 2 geldings and a colt in the barn, with me sitting in the breezeway when someone walked by with a mare. Dewey, one of the stallions, called out with a little whinny to the mare. However, even though it was under his breath (like a: "huh, huh, huh" sound), his whole body shook, his neck arched up as his ears pointed at his intended interest. As I watched and the mare turned the corner Dewey became obviously aroused. He grew longer, and longer, and longer until he was so long that the tip of him touched the shavings on the stall floor. I was so amazed that I put my taco down (risky behavior with cats around), flew out of the barn and exclaimed to Rhonda (who was already saddling up the mare): "Hey, now I know where they got the phrase 'Hung like a horse'!" As I relayed the story, she replied: "Are you talking about Dewey? Oh, he's ridiculous." Since his stature is not quite as tall as the other stallions, it makes him seem even larger in other areas. The very next week a client complained to me how annoying it was that every time she nuzzled toward her husband in attempts to cuddle him, the interaction would always translate to sex for him. When I told her my "Dewey Story" she said with an understanding gleam in her eye: "I want to come out to the barn to see what you see." The idea for equine-assisted groups for women (followed by couples) was born.
