Excerpt from Homespun: November 1925 For years after the Puritan Thanksgiving of 1621 the cele bration of Thanksgiving Day was held at irregular intervals; and until Congress authorized that it be acclaimed a public holi day after the Revolution, it held a more or less obscure position, but even then its observance was limited to the Northern States. It was introduced as a legal holiday in Virginia in 1855; one year later eight Southern States followed Virginia's example. How ever, Thanksgiving was not celebrated nationally until 1864. Since then it has been the yearly duty of the President to proclaim the! Fourth Thursday in November as the national day of Thanksgiving.
