Excerpt from Homespun: December 1925 The whole house with its Yuletide decorations was thor oughly in keeping with the Spirit of its members, to-wit: peace on earth, good will to men, with a lot Of merriment thrown in for good measure. The few wonderful etchings and rare em gravings which broke the soft smooth white of walls at long intervals were tipped with holly. From the simply designed chandelier hung a graceful piece Of mistletoe. In a comfortable corner of the room reigned a handsome Christmas tree. Its many, many subjects were donned in the gayest of costumes, some green, some red, and some white; packages tied with pretty corded strings and ribbons of gold, silver, red and green. Now and then could be seen a shy little trick tucked away in the fork Of a limb. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Homespun: November 1925 For years after the Puritan Thanksgiving of 1621 the cele bration of Thanksgiving Day was held at irregular intervals; and until Congress authorized that it be acclaimed a public holi day after the Revolution, it held a more or less obscure position, but even then its observance was limited to the Northern States. It was introduced as a legal holiday in Virginia in 1855; one year later eight Southern States followed Virginia's example. How ever, Thanksgiving was not celebrated nationally until 1864. Since then it has been the yearly duty of the President to proclaim the! Fourth Thursday in November as the national day of Thanksgiving. Excerpt from Homespun, Vol. 8: December 1932 Oliver Wendell Holmes, a beloved poet, gives a description in one of his poems of the strict observance of the Sabbath in the Puritan communities. Excerpt from Homespun, Vol. 5: December 1929 Ince primeval man first cherished awe for the supernatural when he opened his eyes and stared in amazement at the wondrous things placed at his disposal for his own comfort and enjoyment, he at some time or other has formed some Conception of the ruler of the heavens, almighty, all-powerful, around whom the whole earth evolved. Even today, we, with all our knowledge given to us by science, still have a God who presides over the universe with a never-erring hand. Our idea is the result of the experience and discoveries of the ages preceding us. Religion is the most puzzling and the most profound question which has confronted the human mind since time began, and it is the most difficult, perhaps, that the mind has tried to cope with. We can readily see that there is some kind of divine power back of everything, because if there were not some sort of a guiding hand to keep this old world right, things could not progress in such a smooth fashion. Excerpt from Homespun, Vol. 4: October 1928 Bruce was bewildered. He had gotten the wrong house, he supposed. But the girl in pink was so charming. Why not stay and play the game? He asked himself. The real Jimmy Price would not be there until he reasoned, and by that time he would be on his way back home. His thoughts were interrupted by the entrance of Joe. Well, well! He exclaimed, extending his hand. So this is Jimmy Price, Betsy's son. Betsy was my Sister, Jim, and a humdinger at that. She had a whole string of beaux, but finally eloped with Gerald Price, your father. She died when you came, and Gerald died of grief two months later. We lost track of you entirely until I read an announcement in the paper of your connection with that furniture company. Well, we're mighty glad to see you. Just make yourself at home. Excerpt from Homespun, Vol. 3: A Literary Magazine; March 1928 It is late afternoon of a warm spring day. The exterior of Burton's store is seen at the left; it is an old wooden building with two windows on either side of a central door. Canned goods, etc., may be seen through the windows. A dusty road passes in front of the store, with low bushes bordering it in the background. When the curtain rises, four men are seen on the porch, in various attitudes of contemplation. All are old and gray-haired, but one seems older than the rest. During the scene, he is listened to with respectful attention. All the men are smoking pipes, and one gathers the impression that this meeting is a daily occurrence. The four are silent for a moment, then one speaks.
