A litany is pronounced: "Let us pray to the Lord in peace," in which petitions for the blessing of the water are offered. In this case, censing of water is performed. Then the priest reads a prayer for the blessing of water: "God, our Lord, the Great is in counsel ..." and then a secret prayer: "Incline, Lord, Thine ear ..." Sometimes another prayer is read: "Great Named, creative miracles, there are no numbers! Come and now to Thy servant who begs Thee, O Lord, and send Thy Holy Spirit and sanctify this water, and give Thy drinkers from her and accepting and sprinkling it with you, change of passion, forgiveness of sins, sickness, healing and deliverance from all evil, and affirmation and sanctification of the house, and the purification of all filth and libel of the devil, casting away, as if blessed and glorified, your Most Impressive and Magnificent Name, the Father and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and forever and ever. Amen". After reading the prayers, the priest, holding the Honest Cross with both hands with the Crucifixion to himself, makes with its bottom part a crosswise movement on the surface of the water, then immerses the entire Cross in water. At the same time, the troparion is sung: "Save, Lord, Thy people" ... (three times) and then the stichera "Your gifts ..."

The inner life of the Church, where man becomes "god by grace" (St. Athanasios the Great) through the reception of the Divine Energies or Grace of God, is centered on the Holy Mysteries. In this volume, Elder Cleopa explains the origins, meaning, and purpose of the Holy Mysteries of baptism, chrismation, confession, ordination, marriage, and holy anointing. He also deconstructs the errors of those who misunderstand or reject this life in Christ. Squarely based on Holy Scripture and its interpretation by the Holy Fathers of every age, Elder Cleopa brings to light neglected knowledge and rejected counsel stored up for so many centuries in the Orthodox Church--insights that could have helped avoid the disintegration of the Western church, and which may still aid in its restoration even today.

Through the Holy Spirit we become 'sons of God', as we invoke Him upon the Holy Mysteries and receive them. This guide to the Holy Mysteries is a path to lead us to what our spiritual life should be, so that we truly become Christians. While we complete these Holy Mysteries, the Holy Spirit dwelling within us aids and sustains us in following Christ, so that we meet Him in all those places where He is to be found: in Baptism, at our partaking of the Holy Gifts, in Marriage, in prayer services, and (in general) in accomplishing all the promises that we have made at our baptism. In this way we come to realise that He who rose from the dead is always near at hand, so that our eyes do not close and so prevent us from focussing on our one goal that is Christ, but rather receive his light to shine permanently in our lives and in our conduct. Our understanding of the Holy Mysteries helps us to understand the extent of the importance of our life in the Church. It reminds us that our life in the Church joins us to the living Christ who calls us through the Holy Spirit to meet Him in prayer and worship, in repentance and in confession, in the Gifts and in the Holy Scriptures, and in the call of any human brother or sister who may need our service and our love.

"If C.S, Lewis were alive today, and a convert to the Orthodox Church, this is the book he would write. Professor Bush has written the most uplifting and at the same tome informative book on. the Orthodox Church I have ever read. If you are going to read only one book on Orthodoxy, this is it." Writing both for the Orthodox and the non-Orthodox, the author explains why, in spite of wide ethnic diversity, Orthodox Christians speak confidently of "the" Orthodox Church. This stimulating and informative presentation of Orthodoxy as the "right glory" of apostolic Christianity, still alive in the world today; is illuminated by pertinent examples from Orthodoxy's long, glorious, but often suffering history as the "Kingdom of the Holy Trinity" on earth. The author proposes that the Holy Fathers' teaching that God is beyond human concepts applies equally to God's Church, its mystery being rooted also in the dual nature of Christ and the triune nature of God. Like holiness, the church's mystery becomes a personal reality only through an on-going, ascetic love for Orthodoxy's liturgical life, whereby the believer gains an ever deepening intimacy with Holy Scriptures and Holy Tradition as well as with Jesus Christ as Lord and God.
