Excerpt from The Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania: An Historical Outline With the expectation that it would constitute one of a collection of histories of the medical colleges for women in this country, which were to be embodied as part of the Report on Women in Medicine in the United States, prepared by Dr. Frances Emily White for the World's Congress of Representative Women, held in Chicago in 1893. The delay in the publication of the large body of the reports of this Congress, promised by the United States Govern ment, and the receipt of frequent and urgent re quests for more detailed information in regard to the part taken by this College in the education of women in medicine, have induced the author to publish this. Before 1850, the field of medicine was almost completely closed to women. In 1850, a group of radical reformist male Quaker physicians and associates founded the Female Medical College of Pennsylvania to offer formal medical training to women. By the 1890s, under the guidance of a series of pioneering women deans, the school grew into a progressive medical collegem re-named the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania (WMC). This development occurred despite the stubborn and at times near violent opposition of most of the male medical community of Philadelphia.
