Excerpt from History of the Underground Railroad as It Was Conducted By, the Anti-Slavery League: Including Many Thrilling Encounters Between Those Aiding, the Slaves to Escape and Those Trying, to Recapture Them In writing a history of the so-called Underground Railroad, the author is controlled by a desire to be just to the anti-slavery people who were aiding the slaves to gain their freedom, and to the pro-slavery people who were hunting for runaway slaves to return them to their masters, all of whom were active in this work in all the country bordering on the Ohio river during the early fifties. In no case has he given the right names of persons where their actions might be construed by their living relatives as reflecting unfavorably on their characters. The data for this work were secured by the personal experiences of the author, working with the superintendent of the Anti-Slavery League, who had charge of this work here. Also from data gathered from many persons who were connected with the work. This has never been in print before except some articles which the author used in his Pioneer History of Indiana, and which properly belong in this work. For many years the author has been waiting for some one more competent to do this work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
