Excerpt from History of the Second Advent Message and Mission, Doctrine and People We felt incompetent to select, from the mass of facts connected with this theological and religious revolution. Such portions as were most important for the public, and prepare such a work as the merits of the cause demand and as should be produced from the abundant material at hand: and we have long waited in hope that, as time lingered, some man of literary ability, with a liv ing interest in this subject, would write a history. Several have proposed to do so, but did not; perhaps it presented too many complicated phases. Without any, claim to literary attainments, we have entered upon the work, believing duty led in that direction, and here present the results of our efforts, in the following pages. Not for the eye of the literary critic, but for the study, information, and contemplation of sober thinkers. It contains a large amount of valuable information for all Christian students, whether they ao cept all the views of Advent believers or not. We have aimed to collect the most important historical matters and many valuable criticisms bearing on the subject at issue, whether they favored our views or otherwise. As part of the Adventist Classic Library, this volume includes a facsimile reproduction of Isaac C. Wellcome's 1874 publication History of the Second Advent Message and Mission, Doctrine and People. Wellcome, a member of the Advent Christian branch of Adventists, produced this first general history of the movement that had promoted the belief that the Second Advent of Jesus would take place on October 22, 1844. Though primarily a historical narrative of the Millerite movement and an important source of information about early Adventism, Wellcome's work also includes much theological discussion. His book, as historian Gary Land observes, is "a significant example of the Advent Christian side in the struggle to claim the mantle of William Miller." Wellcome's book records his own personal memories and those of others, includes biographical sketches of more than thirty-five Millerite and Advent Christian leaders, and provides quotations and lengthy extracts from other early published Advent materials, many of which no longer exist in original form. This volume provides a scholarly introductory essay by Gary Land which presents a biographical sketch of Isaac Wellcome, early Millerite historiography, and some discussion of Wellcome as a historian and later Advent Christian historians as well. Also included in this reprint edition are a name index and a general index which should serve as a guide to the most prominent subjects and persons discussed in Wellcome's volume.

Excerpt from Sermons on the Second Advent of the Lord Jesus Christ In committing these Sermons to the press again, after the lapse of thirty years, the Author is more and more confirmed in his convictions, that the revealed truth of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ is the grand desideratum in the present conflicts of the true Church of God in this land. Members, and prominent members, of our National Church have departed more and more from "the simplicity of Christ" as rescued from the traditions of men by our Reformers, and expressed in the natural grammatical meaning of our Thirty-nine Articles. This departure has been on both sides, and to extremes. On the one side, to the meretricious arts and contrivances and ornamentations of "the strange woman," who is content to remain without her absent Husband; and on the other side, to the philosophic pride which is "willingly ignorant" of what the lord Jesus is, and did, at His first coming; and asks, with scoffing scorn, "Where is the promise of His coming" again? J.N. Loughborough was involved in the Advent movement from its early days, having been called to preach by E.G. White in 1852. During his years of service in the Seventh-day Adventist Church, he worked in New England, Michigan, Ohio, Great Britain, and California. In 1902 Loughborough published an account of the message and history of Seventh-day Adventism titled The Rise and Progress of the Third Angel's Message. Unfortunately, the book was lost when the Review and Herald burned in 1903. Starting over from scratch, Loughborough wrote a new book titled The Great Second Advent Movement that was published in 1905. In it he provides personal testimony and insight into the history of the church, the visions and prophecies of Ellen White, early divisions in the church, and various philosophical and religious matters, as well as some autobiographical material.
