Excerpt from History of the Church of England The Church of England is a portion of that Corporate Organisation of Christianity which our Lord Jesus Christ founded, which His Apostles built up, which was gradually extended by them and their successors from city to city and from land to land, and which has lived in unbroken continuity to the present time. At what time, by what channels, this Divine Organisation was extended to this land, is the subject of this first chapter. Excerpt from History of the Church of England From 1660 English Church from the restoration of the monarchy and the passing of the Act of Uniformity down to a period which most of us remember, and at which all the chief questions that now agitate the Church had already come into distinct prominence, and might be regarded as burning. I was not made aware of the existence of the very elaborate essays of Abbey and Overton, until a great part of this book was already in type, and consequently it was altogether out of my power to make any more than mere verbal alterations. I will, therefore, content myself with remarking that their work is of a different character from mine, and intended for a different class of readers. Excerpt from The Church of England The history of the English Church begins with the conversion to Christianity of the English people. There were already Chris tians in all parts of Great Britain; where the English had conquered and settled there was a minority of serfs; elsewhere a Celtic population that was either independent or under English domination. But these Chris tians were to have, at the utmost, an influence upon English Christianity; they were not to control its structure or its character. Excerpt from A History of the Church of England: Pre-Reformation Period It is to be presumed that a reason may be assigned for every book which is written. It may not always be evident to the reader, but the author must be conscious of some cause which moved him to write. In the present instance the moving cause was the lack of any work which seemed to the writer to trace the long story of the Church of England with sufficient brevity and sufficient fulness. Dry epitomes there are in abundance. Scholarly researches into the most remote past come forth year by year. The history of portions of the long centuries, or personal narrative, has been often written with appreciative genius. But there seemed more than room for a connected narrative which might be useful to one who is commencing acquaintance with English Church history, and which might also possess sufficient interest for the general reader. The Church of England is at once old and new. It has been reformed, but its heritage has come down to it through more than a millennium. Excerpt from A Short History of the Church of England Christian faith was brought to its people. But by whose enthusiasm this bringing of the Faith came about it is impossible to say. There is an old legend that Joseph of Arimathea came with twelve companions and settled at Glastonbury, and in the ground there planted his staff, which budded and grew into the famous Holy Thorn. That beautiful story, however, is only first heard of many hundred years after S. Joseph was dead. The cause which most likely led to the heathen Britons being taught the faith was an outbreak of bitter persecution which fell upon the Christians in South - Eastern Gaul in the year 177. Just as we read in the New Testament that by reason of the persecution of Stephen, Philip and others were scattered abroad, so, too, in all probability as a result of the persecu tion at Lyons and Vienne, fugitives fled along the great Roman roads to cross the Channel and hide in Britain, as in an earlier day fugitives from the rule of Julius Caesar had also done.
