Sir Hudson Lowe, and Official Documents Not Before Made Public ON the 7th of January, 1819, Captain Nicholls represented to Major Gorrequer that Bonaparte had of late thought proper to adopt a system of concealment which made it impossible for him to do his duty at Longwood, and that references to any of his followers tended only to embarrass, Iather than facilitate, his duties. He said that the day before he had had an interview with Count Montholon, who told him that, for several days past, Napoleon had been so ill that he was not able to sit Up to receive visitors; but in opposition to this Captain Nicholls asserted that he knew that General Bona parte was seen late the evening before in one of his gardens, dressed, with his cocked-hat on. Excerpt from History of the Captivity of Napoleon at St. Helena, Vol. 2 of 3: From the Letters and Journals of the Late Lieut.-Gen. Sir Hudson Lowe, Official Documents Not Before Made Public A voluminous correspondence now commenced and many interviews took place between Las Cases and Sir Hudson Lowe. The former says in his Journal, referring to this period, that a state of inactivity and passiveness did not agree with the nature of his disposition; and he certainly gave proof of this in the numerous letters which he addressed from Ross Cottage to the Governor, who replied sometimes verbally and sometimes in writing. It will only be necessary to notice the chief points of importance or interest. Las Cases, in his Journal, conveys the impression that he never received from the Governor the smallest, act of accommodation, nor any return for the efforts which he himself made to conciliate him.
