Excerpt: ...killed, and the kingdom passed to the Lancaster family, in the person of the Duke of Richmond, who was crowned on the field of battle and hailed as King Henry VH. by Sir William Stanley, the brother of Thomas, Earl of Derby. There seems to be little doubt that Sir Thomas Pylkington took part in this struggle on the side of Richard, as he was attainted by Henry, who granted his estates to the before-mentioned Earl of Derby. The right of the presentation of the church became in this manner the property of the Derby family, and has ever since been retained by them. At the period of the Great Rebellion, when the Puritan party, as they obtained power, showed the one-sidedness of their views about religious liberty, by ejecting from their livings all those clergymen who, being duly ordained by the bishops of the Church, remained faithful to their ordination vows, and, notwithstanding threats of fines and imprisonment, continued to use the Book of Common Prayer. Among these was the Rev. Peter Travis, B.D., Factor of Bury. By an order of Parliament, bearing the date of April 24, 1645, he was " sequestered as a delinquent and disaffected to the Parliament." The rectory of Bury was sequestered from him, as well as that of Halsall, which'he seems to have held in conjunction with, and likewise his own private estate. The story of the creation of Britain's national game has often been told. According to the accepted wisdom, the refined football games created by English public schools in the 1860s subsequently became the sports of the masses. Football, The First Hundred Years, provides a revisionist history of the game, challenging previously widely-accepted beliefs. Harvey argues that established football history does not correspond with the facts. Football, as played by the 'masses' prior to the adoption of the public school codes is almost always portrayed as wild and barbaric. This view may require considerable modification in the light of Harvey's research. Football's First One Hundred Years provides a very detailed picture of the football played outside the confines of the public schools, revealing a culture that was every bit as sophisticated and influential as that found within their prestigious walls. Football, The First Hundred Years sets forth a completely revisionist thesis, offering a different perspective on almost every aspect of the established history of the formative years of the game. The book will be of great interest to sports historians and football enthusiasts alike.
