Excerpt from History of Scituate, Massachusetts: From Its First Settlement to 1831 The value of Town histories if faithfully compiled, is readily acknowledged, since it is from such sources, that more general histories may acquire accuracy. The reasons for attempting a more perfect and copious history of Scituate, than has hitherto appeared, may be found in the facts, that it was one of the earliest settlements in New England, that it took the lead in population, and bore an important part in the civil and military affairs of Plymouth Colony, that it has produced eminent characters, and furnished colonists for peopling more recent settlements, in many of the States of the Union. The first settlers came in by the way of Plymouth, and some of them were of the first ship's company. There was a large access to the settlement in 1633, which company came by the way of Boston, with Mr. Lothrop, their pastor. Previous to 1640, most of the population was from the County of Kent in England, but about the latter date, many came in from Hingham, Dorchester, Watertown, Weymouth and Nantasket, at which places they had resided a few years: many of these were from London, and more, perhaps, from Dorsetshire. Though emigrations have been constantly making from this early settlement, yet we have noticed some remarkable periods of those emigrations: for example.
