Excerpt from Perrin's History of Illinois This is an attempt to present the outline of Illinois history in such a form as to furnish a system, which will secure to the student a convenient index for the further ance of his studies and will enable the historian to avail himself of the groundwork upon which he may build. Quite a number of voluminous historical works, contain ing data concerning the various events which have trans pired in this state, have been issued and these may be con sulted for detailed information. This work aims simply at a brief arrangement, in systematic and chronological form, of leading events, in order to furnish a convenient indicator for those who are desirous of being assisted in pursuing their investigations systematically. The task of writing a full and detailed account of the happenings, which have occurred upon the soil of Illinois within the last two hundred and thirty-two years, will be left to more ambitious historical compilers and commentators. The ambition of the author of this work will be realized and gratified if he may succeed in infusing a spirit of re search into others'by indicating to them'the' importance of the history of our state through this brief recital. Hence, it has been deemed adequate to the scope of this work to give solely that important chain of incidents, which in itself is sufficient to enlist the attention of those who are interested in the history of a people who have. Excerpt from A Student's History of Illinois The author's experience in teaching Illinois History for the past dozen years justifies the belief that he knows what may be omitted and what Should be included in a good text on Illinois History. The revised edition will have the advantage of this knowledge. Maps and illustrations in history texts are valuable in proportion to what they reveal of the real historic move ment. In this age of illustrated literature and travel, the need of pictures in history texts has greatly decreased. This theory is the justification for the omission of many pictures which appeared in the first edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Waller's Brief History of Illinois Illinois has contributed so largely to American history that we cannot fully comprehend the story of our beloved country unless we know something of the trials and triumphs of the people who have given to Illinois its prominence in national affairs. It is my aim here to present the important facts in Illinois history in chronological order and in brief and tangible shape without making any attempt at rhetorical display. Excerpt from History of Illinois It is believed that teachers who use the book will be able to make the study of Illinois history more interesting and instructive if they correlate it with the history of the United States, using the history of the nation as a background for the study of state history. It will be easy to show pupils how the state history fits into the story 'of the nation, especially in chapters of state history on such subjects as Joliet and Marquette, La Salle, George Rogers Clark, The French and Indian War, Slavery in Illinois, Railroads, lincoln-douglas Debates, and Outbreak of the Civil War. Excerpt from The Story of Illinois This volume is an attempt to present a short readable history of the state of Illinois, embody ing the results of the latest research. Naturally it is based to a considerable extent on the five volume Centennial History of Illinois, but for most-of the period covered by the volume the body of source material has been carefully ex amined. Still, my indebtedness to the other au thors of the Centennial History, especially to Pro fessor Clarence W. Alvord, Will be apparent to anyone who is acquainted with their work. I have also to express my gratitude to Dr. Otto L. Schmidt for encouragement and kindly criticism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from History of Illinois: In Words of One Syllable These learn-ed men be-lieve that in man-y pla ces where rel-ics are found, cit-ies of great size and mag-nif-i-cence flour-ish-ed long be-fore the found a-tions of Baal-bee, or Pal-my-ra, or Thebes, were laid. It is wonderful to think that long before Rome was built, or the Pyramids rear-cd their lof-ty heads by the banks Of the Nile, there may have been dense-1y crowd-cd cit-ies all over this fair land; and that on the fruit-ful plains of Ill-in ois, men and women, by thou-sands, lived and loved, suf - fer-cd and died, of whose ex-ist-ence there is scarcely the faint-est trace. All this seems very strange; but the men who tell us these things are much too wise and care-ful to make such state-ments with-out good rea-son. Excerpt from The County of Illinois On the banks of the Mississippi in southwestern Illinois, lies the American Bottom, the land most hallowed by romance and history of all the lands of the old Northwest. Taking no account of the prehistoric epoch whose monuments survive in the numerous Indian mounds of the region, we find its history running back over two centuries to the time when the first white settlers placed their villages by the Side of the great river of the West in an attempt to realize the idea of a colonial empire as conceived by the Grand Monarch in his palace at Versailles. Here for almost a hundred years, while the dominion over the Northwest was passing from France to England and from England to the United States, these villages endured unchanged amidst the creeks and ponds of the bottom, which mirrored in their quiet waters the old world civilization transported into the heart of the wilderness from feudalized France.
