Greene County, Georgia, follows the lives of a people once burdened by the yoke of slavery through their struggles and important accomplishments of today. Located 80 miles east of Atlanta, Greene County is a place with a history rooted in faith. It was a site for many churches that began in "brush arbors," spaces where former slaves could gather for worship and express themselves freely. This volume also illuminates some of the area's most influential residents, including Abraham Colby, the county's first African American to serve as representative in the general assembly in 1868, and Dr. Calvin M. Baber, the county's second African-American physician.

The story of the Civil War and Reconstruction in Greene County, Georgia, is a remarkable tale of both fundamental change and essential continuity. In How Curious a Land, Jonathan Bryant follows the county's social, economic, and legal transformation from a wealthy, self-sufficient plantation economy based on slavery to a largely impoverished, economically dependent community dominated by a new commercial class of merchants and lawyers. Emancipated slaves made up two-thirds of the county's population at the end of the Civil War, and thanks to an able, charismatic, and politically active leadership, they enjoyed early success in pressing for their rights. But their gains, says Bryant, were only temporary, because the white elite retained control of the legal system and used it effectively against blacks. Law also helped shape the course of economic change as, for example, postbellum laws designed to benefit the new commercial elite ensured poverty for most of the county's small farmers, both black and white, by relegating them to the status of sharecroppers and tenants. As a result, the county's wealth, though greatly diminished in the postbellum years, remained concentrated in the hands of a small elite.

Local histories and genealogical records are fascinating and are a valuable tool for anyone tracing their roots. The records compiled in this book are important to those researching their African-American roots, those with ancestors who moved from Delaware, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia, and from the country of England, as well as many other counties in Georgia. Keep in mind, if your ancestor fought in the Revolutionary War, he may have moved to Georgia in order to participate in the many land grants and lotteries. Records included in this book are history of the county, biographies, marriages (1787-1830), Land Grants to Revolutionary Veterans, 1805 Land Lottery, 1827 Land Lottery, Cherokee Land Lottery, deeds, wills (1796-1808,) and land grants. Good luck in your searching!

This history of Greene County, New York, (named for General Nathaniel Greene of Revolutionary War fame) touches on the earliest events of importance in the settlement of each town in the county. "To this early history has been added the most important events of 1925-26-27, together with a limited directory of each town as decided upon by the committee." A detailed history of each town includes its origins, early settlers and notable citizens, natural features, settlements, villages, patents, and a section devoted to pioneers and their homes. Greene County towns include: Ashland, Athens, Cairo, Catskill, Coxsackie, Durham, Greenville, Halcott, Hunter, Jewett, Lexington, New Baltimore, Prattsville, and Windham. A chronology of significant events, arranged by town, follows the historical sketches. A directory lists Greene County officials (1926-27), followed by lists of officials of societies and associations. Similar information is then listed by town, including the population from the 1920 census and 1925 census. A list of school instructors (by town) and a brief index to towns, pioneers, obituaries, chronology, and directories completes this work. Numerous photographs of people and places enliven these pages.
