Excerpt from History of Early Scottish Education The time is ripe for such a History. Hardly any subject has, in recent years, occupied more of the public attention than the organisation of elementary, secondary, and technical schools, and the adaptation of the universities to modern requirements. The State 'has now fully admitted its own responsibilities, and is wisely anxious to stimulate and encourage local support and manage ment under its own supervision. Teachers, School Boards, County Committees, and Members of Parliament are all interested in new schemes for the improvement, extension, and endowment of Secondary and Technical Education. Excerpt from Scottish Education School and University: From Early Times to 1908 I have endeavoured to be accurate in the use of quotation marks, and in verification of references in footnotes. I have revised the whole carefully, supplying omissions, and removing what could with advantage be spared, and it is perhaps not unreasonable to expect that a close and practical acquaintance with the school and university life of both Scotland and England for more than fifty years has prevented me from falling into very serious inaccuracy or misconception. I regret that Mr Strong's interesting treatise on Secondary Education in Scotland did not appear till the whole of the present work was in type, and so too late for me to profit by it. Excerpt from A History of Secondary Education in Scotland: An Account of Scottish Secondary Education From Early Times to the Education Act of 1908 The scope of this history extends considerably beyond the limits assigned by the title. As it is only within recent years that elementary, secondary, and University education in Scotland have been given clear definitions, and as the interaction of educational developments in different countries is much greater than a superficial inquiry would indicate, I have adverted freely to the history of elementary and University education, and, wherever it has seemed necessary or desirable, connected educational developments at home with corresponding developments abroad. But to avoid expanding the volume unduly I have excluded a considerable amount of available 'home' material - interesting and somewhat lighter reading, but not essential to the main purpose of the book - and have in general merely indicated parallelisms in other countries. Thus it seemed to me undesirable to do more than suggest the influence of the Hellenic movement in Germany in the eighteenth century on the educational developments in Scotland in the nineteenth, although there seems little doubt of its probability. In the hope that the book will be of use to the student of education as well as to the general reader, and in particular to the student-teacher, who should be familiar with the significant historical antecedents of the educational system of to-day, I have quoted or indicated authorities for statements or inferences of importance; but such works as Grant's History of the Burgh Schools of Scotland, with its multitude of facts, and Professor Edgar's exhaustive History of Early Scottish Education, are indispensable to the student of the particular subjects with which they deal. Excerpt from Short Studies in Education in Scotland This little book is offered as a contribution toward the solution of problems many of which are familiar to students of Public Education in Scotland. Some of these problems may seem to be administrative rather than strictly educational; but the intimate connection of the two aspects can easily be shown, the former constantly involving the latter. It may seem, too, that the topics discussed are to some extent of merely passing interest, and that legislation, for which the country has so long looked in vain, will set a limit to the factitious importance they at present possess. Excerpt from Education in Scotland IF we except the Athenians and Jews, says Mr. Froude, no people so few in number have scored so deep a mark in the world's history as the Scots have done. Why this pre-eminence of a country, small, mostly barren, of harsh climate, and denied many of the natural advantages found elsewhere? Her very difficulties of climate and soil helped her people to develop; her mountains became a nursery of independence and freedom, her glens and straths the home of a thrifty and hardy race. A certain seriousness of outlook and tenacity of temper natural to their surroundings predisposed such a people to the things of the mind and the spirit. From early timcs they developed an interest in religion and a zeal for learning. Other countries may have Shown a finer flower of scholarship, but in none has the attitude towards education been so democratic, so thoroughly imbued with the belief that learning is for the whole people, so socialised as to afford the spectacle of the sons of the laird, the minister, and the ploughman, seated on the same bench, taught the same lessons, and disciplined with the same strip of leather. Excerpt from History of the High School of Stirling, With Notices of Schools and Education in the Burgh Generally: Eight Centuries of Scotish Education The collecting and arranging of the many facts which find their place in this Story of Education in a Scottish Burgh occupied many spare hours of his busy life; the leisure which he latterly enjoyed gave him the opportunity of putting it in its present form and seeing it through the press. I am, however, much indebted to Mr. W. B. Cook for the careful revision of the last sheets, and to the Rev. Walter Scott for verifying many important facts and dates, and for preparing the Index which completes the volume.
