Excerpt from Historical Sketch of Old Hanover Church Paxtang, Derry and Manada, afterwards known as Hanover, were at this time under the pastoral care of Rev. Mr. Bertram, making a very large and widely scattered congregation. The meeting houses were at Paxtang and Derry, but as new settlers came in, and new lands were taken up, the boundaries of the congregation enlarged, and new meeting houses were needed. The people of Manada were settled along Manada creek, towards the Kittatinny or Blue Hills eastward and northward. The district covered by Mr. Bertram's charge Gwas from fifteen to twenty-five miles in length and breadth, reaching from the Conewago creek to the mountains, and embracing all the people east of the Susquehanna, beyond the western line of the Donegal congregation, Rev. Mr. Anderson's. It was by com mon consent a law of the times, that meeting houses should be about ten miles apart, so that the people might not be compelled to travel too far for Sabbath worship. The formation of new congregations was often a matter of diiliculty and much dispute, as was also the location of new meeting houses. Excerpt from History of Hanover Hanover Academy, as compared with many of our higher seminaries and colleges, presents some advantages to the writer of its biography. In the first place, while much of its history may have been lost, yet its record has not in general been so darkened by the obscurity of a far distant past as to furnish any insuperable difficulty to its historian. Its existence does not antedate the century in which we live, and a venerable neighbor friend of mine, a stockholder in our Academic property, was born(1805) before Hanover Academy was built or thought of. Then, again, the Academy has had comparatively but a limited number of pupils. If it had numbered yearly its four or five hundred students, as Phillips Andover Academy now does, any minute history of it would be huge and unwieldly, and any condensed account of it would be meagre and uninteresting. Hanover Academy has lived long enough and has had numbers enough, both of teachers and scholars, to furnish an interesting variety of historic description. I have sought, so far as I was able, to make an interesting work, but never at the expense of decency or of truth.
