The 1st Regiment, South Carolina Infantry was also known as Butler's 1st Regiment, South Carolina Infantry, 1st South Carolina Infantry Regulars, 1st Regulars or Enlisted Men and several variations of those names. This regiment first served in the Army of the State of South Carolina with ten companies but it was accepted into the service of the Confederate States in May, 1861, with only eight companies, A to H. Companies I and K were added early in 1862. Although called an infantry regiment it acted as artillery. In May 1863, the 1st Regiment was designated the 3rd Regiment South Carolina Artillery or 3rd Heavy Artillery Regiment, but this designation was not confirmed although the regiment continued to serve as artillery. This regiment surrendered with Johnston's forces at Durham Station on April 26,1865.

The South Carolina 1st Infantry Regiment (6 Months 1861) may have been formed early in 1861 or previously. In Rivers Account of the Raising of the Troops for State and Confederate Service he has the following statement: The State troops that had been called down to Charleston relieved the militia who had been on duty for four months. The South Carolina 15th Infantry Regiment completed its organization in September, 1861, at Lightwoodknot Springs, near Columbia, South Carolina. The 15th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry was the fifth and last of the regiments formed to meet the quota of 3,000 new troops assigned to South Carolina by the Confederate government following the battle of 1st Manassas. The regiment drew some men from the 1st SCVI 6 months regiment that disbanded in South Carolina. Members of the 15th came from Richland, Union, Lexington, Kershaw, Fairfield, and Williamsburg counties. The 1st Regiment, South Carolina Cavalry, also known as Hampton's Cavalry Brigade, was organized June 25, 1862, using as its nucleus the 1st South Carolina Cavalry Battalion which had been organized October, 1861. Upon being mustered into Confederate service the First South Carolina Cavalry was assigned to duty in the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. It served that command until late 1862. Ordered north, the unit then saw service in the Army of Northern Virginia. It served in that Army until March 18, 1864. Returned to South Carolina, the regiment rejoined the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, serving in that command until the spring of 1865. It then joined the Army of Tennessee, serving in that Army for the duration of the War.Though the 1st Regiment was part of the surrender of the Army of Tennessee on April 26, 1865 at Greensboro, North Carolina is was most likely not present.The Movie, "The Outlaw Josey Wells" staring Clint Eastwood, and the Book, "Manse" by Wilton Earle are based on the life of Manson, Sherrill Jolly, Sergeant in Company F of this regiment. The South Carolina 5th Infantry Regiment entered State service in April 1861, and was mustered into Confederate service at Orangeburgh, by Barnard E. Bee, Lieutenant Colonel, S. C. I., Mustering Officer, June 4, 1861. At the expiration of the year for which the regiment had entered service, April 13, 1862, the regiment disbanded. Colonel Jenkins then organized a regiment styled The Palmetto Sharpshooters and most of the officers and men of the disbanded Fifth joined the new regiment. Another Fifth was immediately organized, their regimental officers being appointed, or commissioned, April 23, 1862. It served in the Army of Northern Virginia until the surrender at Appomattox, April 9, 1861. The South Carolina 2nd Infantry Regiment Rifles was organized during the spring of 1862 using the 5th South Carolina Battalion Rifles as its nucleus. The Second South Carolina Rifles was organized from extra companies initially intended for Orr's Rifles. These companies were organized into a battalion that was officially designated the Fifth South Carolina Infantry Battalion. The unit was known more popularly as the First South Carolina Rifle Battalion. The regiment fought for most of the war in Virginia. They went with Longstreet to Georgia, but did not participate in the Battle of Chickamauga. They were engaged at Knoxville however, before returning to Virginia. The remnants of the regiment surrendered at Appomattox.
