The 1st (McDowell's) Battalion N.C. Infantry, consisting of seven companies (Crute says the 6th Infantry Battalion), was organized about Aug, l, 1862. The men were recruited in Asheville and the four counties of Madison, Buncombe, and Polk, and a small number were from Tennessee. McDowell's Battalion was increased to a Regiment about Oct. 8, 1862, and designated the 60th Regt. N.C. Infantry It was assigned to Preston's, Stovall's, Reynolds', Brown's and Reynolds' Consolidated, and Palmer's Brigade. The 60th fought at Murfreesboro, served in Mississippi, then participated in the campaigns of the Army of Tennessee from Chickamauga to Bentonville. The 60th North Carolina lost 3 killed, 65 wounded, and 11 missing at Murfreesboro, and in January, 1863, had 276 men present for duty. The unit reported 8 killed, 36 wounded, and 16 missing of the 150 engaged at Chickamauga, totalled 106 men and 59 arms in December, 1863, and mustered a force of 106 in January, 1865. Few surrendered in April. The North Carolina 34th Infantry Regiment was assembled at High Point, North Carolina, in October, 1861. Its members were recruited in the counties of Ashe, Rutherford, Rowan, Lincoln, Cleveland, Mecklenburg, and Montgomery. After serving in the Department of North Carolina, it was sent to Virginia and placed in General Pender's and Scales' Brigade. The North Carolina 38th Infantry Regiment completed its organization in January, 1862, at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, North Carolina. Its members were recruited in the counties of Duplin, Yadkin, Sampson, Richmond, Catawba, Alexander, Randolph, Cleveland, and Cumberland. Ordered to Virginia, the unit was assigned to General Pender's and Scales' Brigade in the Army of Northern Virginia. It fought in many conflicts from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor, then took its place in the Petersburg trenches and saw action in the Appomattox Campaign. The regiment lost thirty-six percent of the 420 at Mechanicsville, had 2 killed and 22 wounded at Second Manassas, and had 14 wounded at Fredericksburg. Its casualties were 20 killed, 77 wounded, and 11 missing at Chancellorsville, and of the 216 engaged at Gettysburg, more than forty percent were disabled. On April 9, 1865, it surrendered with 21 officers and 110 men. The Illinois 60th Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Dubois, Anna. Ill., Feb. 17, 1862. Beginning with the Siege of Corinth the regiment participated in many of the battles in central Tennessee. They were transferred to the Chattanooga area in time to participate in the battles there and pursuit of Longstreet's army to Knoxville. They participated in the Atlanta Campaign, the March to the Sea and the Carolinas Campaign, ending the war in North Carolina. The 60th Illinois participated in the grand review at Washington and then proceeded to Louisville, Ky., where it performed duty as provost guard at the headquarters of the 14th army corps until July 31, 1865, when it was mustered out. The Regiment lost during service 2 Officers and 44 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 4 Officers and 225 Enlisted men by disease. Total 275.
