The North Carolina 45th Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Mangum, 3 miles west of Raleigh, North Carolina, in April, 1862. The various companies that became part of the regiment were raised mostly in Rockingham with 1 company being raised in Caswell, 2 in Guilford and one in Forsyth County. In May 1862 the 45th was brigaded with the 43rd and 50th N. C. under Col. Junius Daniel who until that time had commanded the 45th. The Tennessee 45th Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Trousdale, Tennessee, in December, 1861. It participated in the Battle of Shiloh, was active at Baton Rouge, then served in the Jackson area. Later it was assigned to J.C. Brown's, Brown's and Reynolds' Consolidated, and Palmer's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. In November, 1863, it was consolidated with the 23rd Infantry Battalion. The regiment took an active part in the campaigns of the army from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, moving with General Hood back into Tennessee, but it was not engaged at Franklin and Nashville. It ended the war in North Carolina. The unit sustained 112 casualties at Murfreesboro, lost forty-three percent of the 226 at Chickamauga, and reported 12 men disabled at Missionary Ridge. The 45th/23rd Battalion totaled 316 men and 340 arms in December, 1863. Few surrendered in April, 1865.

The North Carolina 34th Infantry Regiment was assembled at High Point, North Carolina, in October, 1861. Its members were recruited in the counties of Ashe, Rutherford, Rowan, Lincoln, Cleveland, Mecklenburg, and Montgomery. After serving in the Department of North Carolina, it was sent to Virginia and placed in General Pender's and Scales' Brigade. The 34th was active in the many campaigns of the army from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor and later participated in the Petersburg siege south of the James River and the operations around Appomattox.

The North Carolina 38th Infantry Regiment completed its organization in January, 1862, at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, North Carolina. Its members were recruited in the counties of Duplin, Yadkin, Sampson, Richmond, Catawba, Alexander, Randolph, Cleveland, and Cumberland. Ordered to Virginia, the unit was assigned to General Pender's and Scales' Brigade in the Army of Northern Virginia. It fought in many conflicts from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor, then took its place in the Petersburg trenches and saw action in the Appomattox Campaign. The regiment lost thirty-six percent of the 420 at Mechanicsville, had 2 killed and 22 wounded at Second Manassas, and had 14 wounded at Fredericksburg. Its casualties were 20 killed, 77 wounded, and 11 missing at Chancellorsville, and of the 216 engaged at Gettysburg, more than forty percent were disabled. On April 9, 1865, it surrendered with 21 officers and 110 men. The GA 45th Infantry Regiment was formed in the spring of 1862. It began its battles at Hanover Court House where it was not actively engaged. The regiment was first engaged in action at Seven Pines, on the 30th May, 1862, as a portion of the force which attacked the right of the enemy, and retired at the termination of the engagement with a brigade loss of twenty-three killed and fifty wounded. The 45th served until the surrender at Appomattox, engaged in all the great conflicts of the army of Northern Virginia, in the campaigns around Richmond, in northern Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania, and afterward helping to baffle the desperate efforts and over-whelming resources of Grant for nearly a year. The original companies of the 45th Georgia Volunteer Regiment: Company A, Gresham Rifles (Bibb County) Company B, Rutland Volunteers (Monroe County) Company C, Dooly Volunteers (Dooly County) Company D, McCowan Guards (Monroe County) Company E, Taylor Guards (Taylor County) Company F, Gray Volunteers (Jones County) Company G, Myrick Volunteers (Baldwin County) Company H, Henderson Rangers (Houston County) Company I, Byars Volunteers (Butts County) Company K, Ray Guards (Crawford County)
