Excerpt from Historical Record of the Royal Marine Forces, Vol. 1 From an early period a practice has prevailed in many of the continental armies, for each regiment to keep regular records of its services and achievements; but it is only of recent date that this emulative principle has been encouraged in the British service, and hence arises the difficulty of obtaining any authentic account of their origin, or of their subsequent proceedings. This defect has long been felt, and although efforts have been made by individual corps to accomplish so desirable an object, it was not generally enforced until the 13th January, 1836, when the following order was issued from the Horse Guards by general lord Hill, commanding in chief: "His Majesty has been pleased to command, that with a view of doing the fullest justice to regiments, as well as to individuals, who have distinguished themselves by bravery in action with the enemy, an account of the services of every regiment in the British army shall be published under the superintendence of the adjutant-general, and that this account shall contain the following particulars; viz.
