Excerpt from Historical Portraits, Vol. 1 of 3: 1700 1850 The academic, or, as it came subsequently to be called, the classic style, carries down its roots through the humanism of the Renaissance to classical foundations. It had ceased to flourish in Italy, the land of its growth, long before the beginning of the eighteenth century, and the influence of any Italian artists who visited England about that time, mostly decorative painters who only occasionally executed portraits, contained little trace of it. But the seeds of it lingering there were gathered by Sir Joshua Reynolds and matured in his practice. Enforced by his teaching, to which his position as head of the only institute of artistic education then existing in this country gave incalculable weight, his principles became -the principles of the Royal Academy, and his successful career was the proof of their universal acceptance.
