Excerpt from Hints Towards Latin Prose Composition The first edition of this Treatise was naturally incomplete. It consisted of papers drawn up for the use of one of the Upper Forms at Rugby, and the small amount of treatment which the Latin Period, in its relation to our own language, has hitherto received, made the Hints necessarily of a tentative character. The favourable reception which the book has met with from literary critics and the adoption of it in several Public Schools have made the author spare no pains to render the second edition more satisfactory and valuable. The principle on which the Treatise is based is the dictum, 'To do one thing you must know how to do many things.' The right employment of cases, the government of words and the rules of syntax, can of course be learned from books of exercises, but such works, though indispensable at a certain stage, are of little value for conveying an impression of Latin literature and style. Excerpt from Latin Prose Composition This little book, the result of fifteen years' experience in teaching Latin Prose to young boys, is now published in the hope that it may be of use to those who are preparing boys for Public School Examinations. It is recommended that before each Exercise is written, the boys should learn by heart the Syntax rules and Notes at the head of the Exercise, and also the Vocabulary belonging to it, which will be found at the end of the book. No Vocabularies are given after Exercise XXVI., as by the time a boy has advanced so far, he ought to have a sufficient Vocabulary at his command. A frequent and sensible use of a good Latin-English Dictionary should be insisted on in doing the connected pieces. Any suggestions from brother-schoolmasters will be gratefully received. Excerpt from Hints on Translation From Latin Into English Many helpful works have been written on the rendering of English into Latin. Some of them are of altogether exceptional merit, such as Professor J. P. Postgate's Sermo Latinus (Macmillan), Professor H. Nettleship's Passages for Translation into Latin Prose, with an Introduction (Bell), and Professor W. R. Hardie's Latin Prose Composition (Arnold). But on the reverse task, the rendering of Latin into English, much less has been written. Any such consummate treatment of the subject as has recently been provided for French by Dr. R. L. Graeme Ritchie and Mr. James M. Moore does not appear to exist. Nor can the attempt to provide it be made in a few pages. All that can be expected here is some hints derived from personal struggles with the task and from considerable experience both as a teacher of Latin and as an examiner of school and university exercises.
