Mark Patterson was born 2 March 1785 in Chatham County, North Carolina. His father, grandfather and great-grandfather all bore the name Gilbert Patterson. Mark married Dicey (Sarah) Riddle before 1804 and in about 1807 they migrated to Tennessee.
