Excerpt from Higher Education in Indiana, Vol. 10 The direct work Of the State in higher learning is to be especially noticed. The most interesting phase in the history and development of edu cation in the West is to be seen in the attitude of the State. There never has been a time when the right of government to provide for education Of some kind has been called in question by any considerable body of thinking people. Both the elementary and the higher educa tion were provided for by many Of the early colonies, especially by those of New England. And from the time of the first land grant for common school purposes by the Congress of 1785, State aid to education has been an acknowledged principle of the American people - even those Of the most conservative individualism conceding, in some measure, the right and duty of the State to educate. Excerpt from Higher Education in Indiana, Vol. 10 "The people who expect to be ignorant and free in a stats of civilization expect what never was and never can be." - Thomas Jefferson. "Popular government without popular education is but a prologue to a farce or to a tragedy, or to both." - James Madison. "In our country and in our time no man is worthy the honored name of statesman who does not include the highest practicable education of the people in all his plans of administration. He may have eloquence, he may have knowledge of all history, diplomacy, jurisprudence; and by these he might claim in other countries the elevated rank of a statesman; but unless he speaks, plans, labors at all times and in all places for the culture and edification of the whole people, he is not, he can not be an American statesman." - Horace Mann. "If we work upon marble, it will perish; if we work upon brass, time will efface it; if we rear temples, they will crumble to the dust; but if we work upon immortal minds; if we imbue them with high principles, with just fear of God and love of their fellow men, we engrave on those tablets something which no time can efface, but which will brighten and brighten to all eternity." - Anon. "The State - that is every man in the State - is helped by everything that makes the majority wiser, better, or more enlightened. The State stands pledged, through its common schools, its high schools, and its State universities, to give to each one of its boys - and in the West its girls also - the best education that he is willing to receive." - President David Starr Jordan, Indiana University. "Education is an universal right, a prime necessity of man, and it is the duty of the State to provide it." - Dr. J. L. M. Curry. "The Mississippi Valley, where a few years ago 'the danger of barbarism' was pointed out by a gifted orator, has already become a most important factor in the intellectual progress of the country. The center of population, as we know, has already crossed the Alleghany Mountains, and is not far from that central region of political influence from which so many of the highest officers of the Government have come. The wilderness has been explored, the water power measured, the railroads built, the schools and the churches have been planted. We are beginning a new epoch of peace, thrift and enterprise, wiser and more sober as a nation than ever before. We shall attempt better and greater things than hitherto; we shall aspire to do our national part for the advancement of knowledge, in the confidence that this humanity will be benefited, civilization extended, iniquity lessened, and barbarism subdued. We have a continent to teach." - President D. C. Gilman, Johns Hopkins University. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Students' Handbook of State Teachers College Indiana, Pa., 1937-1938, Vol. 10 The Class of 1941 enters this col lege at a most auspicious moment. The times are challenging not only to the professional staff but to stu dents as well. Each freshman will find a number -of immediate prob lems facing him. He must decide upon departments and courses which will be most helpful to him and must make choices as to con tacts with students and teachers. These contacts are! A Vital part of the college life. He must begin at once the development {of profession al attitudes. If he finds this to be a laborious task, he should frankly choose another profession and drop out of the 'institution. Only cap able students and those sincerely interested in teaching should spend time, money, and effort in a state teachers college. It is my convie tion that most members of the class now entering Indiana will success fully meet this criterion and will remain to be graduated four years hence. The Whole environment here is largely what the students make it. They will immediately begin to con tribute to this environment, I am hopeful that their contribution will be constructive, not only keeping the institution on a high plane, but creating for it even a higher one. Excerpt from The Educational Times, and Journal of the College of Preceptors, Vol. 63: January 1, 1910 Just one word more. We have spoken of the inadequate endowments of King's College. Only those acquainted with the inner workings know the strain of carrying on higher education in London. How wasteful the present system is few can realize. The very ablest proies sors are so inadequately paid that they have to spend their leisure time in supplementing their salaries, instead of carrying on research for the benefit of science or literature. No scheme of reorganization will ever place University education in a sound position in London unless endow ments are provided which will relieve the heavy strain under which so far it has been carried on. Gaily decorated tables held delicious foods which no one could resist. Paper Shamrocks, green hair bows, and shamrock candies and cakes were in evidence throughout the day. Then came busy, fast-going days kept full with interviews, class work, and festival practices. We helped elect a new president for council, realizing that her work would go on next year while we were no longer there.
