The goal of this project is to characterize the role of chlorine in coal on the high temperature corrosion processes which can occur in coal combustion and conversion processes. The experiments include laboratory tests performed in well-controlled high temperature environments and field tests in industrial coal fired boilers. Evaluation of samples of boiler tubes which have been recovered from boilers which used both high and low chlorine coals does not indicate that the higher chlorine levels are associated with accelerated corrosion of either water wall tubes or superheater tubes in pulverized coal boilers. Laboratory testing of metal coupons in combustion gas environments produced from low sulfur, high chlorine coal IBC-109 and high sulfur-low chlorine coal IBC-101has been performed at 800°C. No significant difference in corrosion are evident. Further testing at other temperatures and gas compositions is underway.

Laboratory testing of metal coupons in combustion gas environments produced from low sulfur, high chlorine coal IBC-109 and high sulfur-low chlorine coal IBC-101 has been performed at 700 and 800°C. Initial results indicate that more overall corrosion is produced in the high sulfur environment than in the high chlorine environment. Internal attack in the highly alloyed metals alloy 800 and 310 stainless steel is accelerated by the presence of chlorine in the environment, but the level of chlorine required to produce this attack has not yet been determined. Further testing at other temperatures and gas compositions is in progress.

High-temperature corrosion is a major problem affecting sectors such as the power generation, aerospace and metal-working industries. This important book summarises a wide range of research on ways of dealing with this important problem. The first part of the book reviews ways of modifying alloys to improve high-temperature corrosion resistance. The second part discusses surface treatments such as pre-treatments and coatings. The third part of the book summarises research on testing for high-temperature corrosion resistance and the development of common testing standards. It also reviews research on the behaviour of alloys in a wide range of service conditions such as furnace and boiler environments. The final part of the book discusses ways of modelling high-temperature corrosion processes to improve material performance and service life. With its distinguished editors and team of contributors drawn from some of the leading centres of research in the field, Novel approaches to improving high-temperature corrosion resistance is a standard reference for all those studying and dealing with high-temperature corrosion. The book details sources of thermal energy, methods of capture, and applications. It describes the basics of thermal energy, including measuring thermal energy, laws of thermodynamics that govern its use and transformation, modes of thermal energy, conventional processes, devices and materials, and the methods by which it is transferred. It covers 8 sources of thermal energy: combustion, fusion (solar) fission (nuclear), geothermal, microwave, plasma, waste heat, and thermal energy storage. In each case, the methods of production and capture and its uses are described in detail. It also discusses novel processes and devices used to improve transfer and transformation processes.

The main goal of the project was to develop online corrosion sensors in pulverised (PF) and circulating fluidised bed (CFB) combustion systems in order to fire biomass and other low-grade fuels safely at high portions in power plants. Another important goal was to find protective effects from coal in power plant furnaces during co-firing biomass and other low-grade fuels. The obtained results helped significantly to understand the information derived from corrosion sensors, which is essential to their integration for power plant process control. The studied sensors already in their present form have potential for power plant control. Due to the complicated character of signal formation and some needs to change particular details in the sensor construction, further development work would be useful. Optimising the sensitivity and availability to long-lasting reliable operation in very difficult environments would be key issues. The project results can also be utilised to re-consider the role of coal in energy production. The new idea to use coal as a protective agent ensuring biomass firing at very high portions instead of considering coal only as a co-firing fuel, can improve acceptance and public opinion to the use of coal in biomass power plants. The addition of coal in many biomass power plants has been forbidden so far due to fossil CO2 formation, which can prevent the utilisation of many potential biomass fuels in those plants. Experimental work was first conducted with pilot-scale pulverised fuel and circulating fluidised bed reactors with various sizes. The obtained results, refined further with modelling tools, were successfully used to conduct the power plant tests.
