Aerospace and naval applications of polymers in conditions once thought too harsh for them, take center stage in the survey of how polymer composites react to environmental conditions. A dozen papers from a symposium in San Diego, October 1991, describe damage mechanisms and failure, materials behavior under combined effects, and constitutive models, sometimes considering polymers as a whole, but more often specific groups or composites. Advanced polymer matrix composites (PMC) have many advantages such as light weight and high specific strength that make them useful for many aerospace applications. Enormous uncertainty exists, however, in predicting long-term changes in properties of PMCs under extreme environmental conditions, which has limited their use. To help address this issue, the Department of Defense requested a study from the NRC to identify the barriers and limitations to the use of PMCs in extreme environments. The study was to focus on issues surrounding methodologies for predicting long-term performance. This report provides a review of the challenges facing application of PMCs in extreme environments, the current understanding of PMC properties and behavior, an analysis of the importance of data in developing effective models, and recommendations for improving long-term predictive methodologies.

A complete coupled model of the environmentally-induced degradation of composite materials, and the effect of this degradation on composite laminate behavior, is presented. Although the model is not sufficiently mature for predictive design use, it provides major insights into the mechanisms of degradation of composite materials. The model is used to study test methods frequently used to assess composite durability, including weight loss, shrinkage, and mechanical property degradation testing. It is found that even simple tests of material undergoing environmentally-induced degradation are difficult to interpret. In particular, the spatial non-uniformity of degradation converts originally simple specimens into complex structures with non-uniform chemical and mechanical states. Consideration of this complexity is vital to the full understanding of the results of such tests.

A variety of environmental factors can influence the performance of advanced polymers and composites. In particular, exposure to a combination of moisture and elevated temperature can significantly alter properties. The extent of chemical and physical changes is a function of exposure time and the temperature and humidity of the environment. This work discusses the effects of chemical and physical aging of AFR700B, a high-temperature addition polyimide resin. Neat resin samples were isothermally aged for 500 and 1000 hours at 250 deg C in dry air, humid air, and dry nitrogen. Changes in the dynamic mechanical properties and weight of the resin samples after these different exposures are discussed. An accelerated aging process was developed to facilitate the study of hydrolytic degradation. The effect of degradation on the Tg, weight, and mechanical behavior is discussed. The use of a silicon-nitride moisture barrier proved ineffective.

Explore the diverse electrical engineering application of polymer composite materials with this in-depth collection edited by leaders in the field Polymer Composites for Electrical Engineering delivers a comprehensive exploration of the fundamental principles, state-of-the-art research, and future challenges of polymer composites. Written from the perspective of electrical engineering applications, like electrical and thermal energy storage, high temperature applications, fire retardance, power cables, electric stress control, and others, the book covers all major application branches of these widely used materials. Rather than focus on polymer composite materials themselves, the distinguished editors have chosen to collect contributions from industry leaders in the area of real and practical electrical engineering applications of polymer composites. The books relevance will only increase as advanced polymer composites receive more attention and interest in the area of advanced electronic devices and electric power equipment. Unique amongst its peers, Polymer Composites for Electrical Engineering offers readers a collection of practical and insightful materials that will be of great interest to both academic and industrial audiences. Those resources include: A comprehensive discussion of glass fiber reinforced polymer composites for power equipment, including GIS, bushing, transformers, and more) Explorations of polymer composites for capacitors, outdoor insulation, electric stress control, power cable insulation, electrical and thermal energy storage, and high temperature applications A treatment of semi-conductive polymer composites for power cables In-depth analysis of fire-retardant polymer composites for electrical engineering An examination of polymer composite conductors Perfect for postgraduate students and researchers working in the fields of electrical, electronic, and polymer engineering, Polymer Composites for Electrical Engineering will also earn a place in the libraries of those working in the areas of composite materials, energy science and technology, and nanotechnology.

Annotation Improved reliability in commercial and military applications requires improved understanding of and predictive models for the time- dependent and nonlinear mechanical behavior of polymeric composites. The May 1998 American Society for Testing and Materials symposium sought to fuse the efforts in this direction of specialists in polymers and composites; these 18 papers are therefore grouped under the subheadings of polymers and composites. Primary polymer topics are chemical and physical aging, nonlinear viscoelasticity, and viscoplasticity. Composites' issues include: the effect of physical aging on time-dependent behavior, multiaxial nonlinear effects, compressive behavior, nonlinear viscoelasticity and viscoplasticity, failure mechanisms, hygrothermal effects, durability, and accelerated strength testing. Schapery is affiliated with the U. of Texas at Austin, and Sun is at Purdue U. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.
