This book highlights the system modeling, control, diagnosis and fault-tolerant design of the suspension, and guidance system of the high-speed maglev train based on electromagnetic suspension technology. The electromagnetic suspension technology has been widely used in real-life engineering, including maglev trains, magnetic bearings, magnetic levitation vibration isolators, magnetic suspension and balance systems for wind tunnels, etc. Based on the academic researches, engineering applications, and technical innovations of high-speed maglev trains carried out by the maglev team of the National University of Defense Technology, this book summarizes the technical achievements in the field of levitation and guidance control technology of high-speed maglev train. It analyzes the research status and challenges of the suspension control technology of the electromagnetic suspension maglev train. The suspension, guidance system modeling, and controller design of the high-speed maglev train are described in detail. The performance index and performance evaluation method of the levitation and guidance system under various working conditions are analyzed respectively. A suspension scheme of permanent magnet electromagnetic hybrid suspension high-speed maglev train is proposed, and the results of the vehicle test are given in order to further improve the suspension energy consumption and heating of electromagnetic suspension high-speed maglev train. The suspension and guidance fault diagnosis and tolerant control methods of the high-speed maglev train are studied to improve the system's safety and reliability. The research and application results of suspension control technology of electromagnetic suspension maglev train are fully displayed for readers. This book is intended for researchers, scientists, engineers, and graduate students involved in the rail transit industry, train control and diagnosis, and maglev technology.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of magnetic levitation (Maglev) technologies, from fundamental principles through to the state-of-the-art, and describes applications both realised and under development. It includes a history of Maglev science and technology showing the various milestones in its advancement. The core concepts, operating principles and main challenges of Maglev applications attempted across various fields are introduced and discussed. The principle difficulties encountered when applying Maglev technology to different systems, namely air gap control and stabilization, are addressed in detail. The book describes how major advancements in linear motor and magnet technologies have enabled the development of the linear-motor-powered Maglev train, which has a high speed advantage over conventional wheeled trains and has the potential to reach speed levels achieved by aircraft. However, many expect that Maglev technology to be a green technology that is applied not only in rail transportation, but also in diverse other fields; to ensure clean transfer in LCD manufacturing, in ropeless high speed elevators, small capacity rail transportation, space vehicle launchers, missile testers, energy storage, and so on. These potential applications and their unique challenges and proposed technological solutions are introduced and discussed in depth. The book will provide readers from academia, research institutes and industry with insights on where and how to apply Maglev technology, and will serve as a guide to the realization of their Maglev applications.

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Engineering - Industrial Engineering and Management, grade: 1,3, Vrije University Brussel (Solvay Business School), course: Advanced Technology, language: English, abstract: The magnetic levitation train analysed in this study was developed in Germany by the Transrapid International GmbH & Co. KG, a joint venture by Siemens AG and ThyssenKrupp AG, as a means for high speed transportation. First prototypes were presented to the public as early as 1969 and 1979, yet, the first public high-speed maglev track was opened only four years ago in Shanghai, China. Despite the fact that businesspeople like engineers from all sorts of backgrounds speak very highly of the technology, the Shanghai track remains the only commercially operated one thus far.1 Purpose of this paper is to analyse the potential of the maglev train, to assess its strengths and weaknesses, and to spot opportunities as well as threats to the application of this state-of-the-art - or perhaps ahead-of-its-time - technology.

This project presents a comprehensive survey of Maglev Train technologies that have developed over the years. Recent studies have shown that road transportation is the most common form of worldwide transportation accounting for about 35.1%. Further research has shown that 72.6% of total CO2 emissions from transportation results from road transportation and it consumes 75.3% of total transportation energy demand [1]. These facts together highlight the reason that there must be clean and efficient mass transportation systems. This shows the essential need for the electrification of railways and the necessity to improve their technological performance. Researchers and manufacturers have been encouraged to nurture developments of magnetic levitation, Maglev, based rail technology on a worldwide scale. Maglev systems are fully electrified systems that provide cleaner, faster, and more efficient public transportation systems. The paper provides a full assessment of Maglev train technologies that are currently operating or under construction. The history of Maglev trains is provided along with the various technologies that have been employed over the last few decades. With Japanese Maglev technology having an astonishing head start in the race they may be hard to beat. Germany followed closely with their Maglev train, Transrapid. China, Korea, and the United States are all stepping up their Maglev technologies. This paper will dive deep into each of these technologies and take a closer look at their propulsion, levitation, guidance, power, and control systems. Ten worldwide projects have been reviewed in detail analyzing their propulsion, levitation, and power system technology. Additionally, this paper provides a comparison between energy consumption, CO2 emissions, and cost of construction between the high-speed rail, maglev train, and hyperloop.
