Smith, Acting President of Cornell University, dated 1921 September 9 and October 3, concerning Smith's invitation to Hoover to attend the inauguration ceremony for Cornell President Livingston Farrand on October 20. Hoover initially writes that he is not sure he can make it; then he declines, saying his schedule will not permit him to leave Washington. The third letter (1956) is addressed to Stanley C. Shaw of Ithaca, New York, thanking him for sending Hoover a copy of the book The Builder, Philip Dorf's biography of Ezra Cornell.
