Knox signs with his initials. References a note King wrote earlier respecting a nephew of Judge [Abraham] Yates entering into the military Line. Tells King an ensigncy has become vacant in the regular regiment and that he has told President Washington of the appointment. Fears that you and his other friends may think that he ought to be in a higher grade, but it is not possible. Asks King to find out if the nephew is still interested. Heard from Ralph Izard that he (Izard) gave King a pamphlet on the [Yazoo] Company. Asks King and Doctor William Samuel Johnson to send him documents on the sale, as well as pamphlets relative to the title. Large parts of pages two and three are struck, and in this section, Knox mentions the history of land ownership in the Carolinas and Georgia. As this issue will doubtlessly come up at the next session of Congress, Knox wants to have as much information as possible, and does not know who else to ask but King.

Discusses his efforts in advocating for the passage of the Constitution, such as speaking to the representatives from Maine, and trying to correct some ill impression they received. Also mentions the advocacy work some judges are doing in support of passage: [William] Cushing the Chief Justice gave a solemn charge last week in Bristol to the Grand Jury, enlarged upon our distressed situation, the Danger of Anarchy, and the well founded fear that we might yet lose our Freedom for want of Government and concluded in favor of the adoption of the Report of the Convention.

Notes that although the salary is low, there will be a possibility for an increase, or an allowance for rent and traveling expenses. Declares, If the wishes of your particular friends, and the entire satisfaction of the states would be an inducement to your acceptance, you cannot refuse- I could not excuse myself, did I not make these observations to you; the present wasting condition of the Department requires the hand of a master; if you decline, I fear we shall be driven into an election, that will neither aid the dignity, nor preserve the interest, of the Union...
