Knox, Commander at West Point, congratulates General Greene, Commander of the Southern Department. Recently received news of Greene through Major Burnet. Writes, To say only I congratulate you on the enemys total evacuation of the Southern States, would very imperfectly express my happiness upon the occasion... you must be doubly happy, in being so fortunate as to be conscious of having done well... prominent actions, if not attended with success, are often disregarded by the people. But thank God the case is otherwise with you. Notes that he has been at West Point for five months. Comments on the death of his youngest son, a little angel. Expresses hope in the possibility of peace with the British. Sends the compliments of another general stationed with him at West Point.

Discusses the issue of General Nathanael Greene being responsible for John Bank's debts. States that Mrs. Greene and her friends are petitioning Congress for an indemnification. General Greene made a statement to Congress in 1785 explaining the transaction. Knox sends a copy of this statement (not present). If the indemnification is not granted, Greene's family will be greatly in debt and in dire straights. Believes the deceased Greene's reputation, along with his statement, should be enough to obtain the indemnification requested. Thinks a corroborative certificate from Carrington and perhaps General [Anthony] Wayne will help obtain the indemnification. Mentions that Lucy Knox had another son and both are doing well.

Since arriving in Philadelphia, has tried to gather a party of about 30 artificers to give to Greene. Discusses Mrs. Greene's trip with their son George Washington Greene to visit Greene at the high hills of Santee (the Santee River in South Carolina, where Greene was stationed). Also mentions the recent birth of a son to him and Mrs. Knox, whom I should name after you were not for the confounded name given by your [illegible] father - as it is I shall call him after some roman whose character I think you may like (possibly referring to his son Marcus). Sends love to Colonel Williams and Colonel Laurens.
