An introductory text for orbitologists, completely rewritten to reflect major developments pertaining to orbital tumors in the 13 years since publication of the second edition. Foremost in this regard is the routine use of soft tissue imaging methods for the preoperative clinical assessment of patients with orbital tumors, and the application of immunohistochemistry, monoclonal antibodies, and molecular genetic analysis to the classification and histopathological identification of many of the orbital lesions. Likewise, adjuvant chemotherapy has enlarged the management options of selected cases, and orbitectomy, rather than orbitotomy, has evolved for some of the malignant neoplasias. Orbital Tumors, 2nd edition discusses advances in orbital disease and their treatment, offering readers an up-to-date, single volume reference for orbital tumors. Divided into two parts, this book covers everything from advances in oncogenesis and its relationship to orbital tumors, to medical genetics and the role of imaging in diagnosis of orbital tumors. Additionally, new information on incidence and behavior of tumors resulting from environmental and social trends is included. Written and edited by leaders in the fields of ophthalmology and oncology, Orbital Tumors, 2nd edition builds upon the first edition, proving to be a useful reference for orbital specialists and of significant interest for everyone dealing with orbital pathology from a clinical and scientific point of view.

From the Preface: “About every ten years a new book appears on any given medical specialty subject. Naturally, this is not because the entire body of knowledge on that specialty is overhauled every ten years but because the progress made over a decade usually warrants expressing new perspectives on quite a few diseases. Orbital oncology certainly qualifies as a subspecialty that merits an update every decade. At least two or three excellent textbooks on orbital tumors have been written since the mid-1980s. This book reports advances in knowledge about orbital diseases and their treatment and offers an up-to-date, single-volume reference for orbital tumors with particular emphasis on new improvements in diagnostic and therapeutic measures. Part I comprises advances in oncogenesis and its relationship to orbital tumors. Changes in the biological behavior of diseases in the general patient population are much slower than technological advances; nevertheless, those alterations take place as well. One of the major medical issues of our time, for example, is the changes in the immunological status of individuals. This issue influences the entire field of medicine, particularly oncology, including the treatment of orbital tumors. Chapters 2 to 5 summarize these influences. Medical genetics gained momentum during the past two decades and now affects the clinical practice of almost every discipline of medicine, including ophthalmology and orbitology. Chapters on principles of molecular genetics and immunosurveillance mechanisms of neoplasia and on the occurrence of multiplt, malignant neoplasms in retinoblastoma have been included to apply molecular concepts to clinical practice related to orbital tumors. Advances in one discipline often directly benefit practice in another field. In orbitology, no development has been more influential than the revolution in imaging techniques, including ultrasonography, computerized tomography, and magnetic resonance methods. Four chapters in Part II are devoted to the role of imaging in diganosis of orbital tumors. Other diagnostic advances entailing immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, gene microarray, and the polymerase chain reaction are summarized in a separate chapter on orbital biopsy.”

This well-illustrated book presents the latest diagnostic concepts and management techniques in the rapidly expanding subspecialty of pediatric oculofacial plastic surgery. Covering all aspects of the field and taking into account numerous surgical innovations and exciting new medical treatment concepts that have emerged since publication of the previous edition in 2002, Pediatric Oculoplastic Surgery, 2nd Edition will prove to be an invaluable resource for both the comprehensive ophthalmologist and the subspecialist with a particular interest in pediatric disorders of the eyelids, orbit, and nasolacrimal system. Topics discussed, in addition to clearly illustrated basic oculoplastic procedures, include surgical innovations ranging from the Sonopet system for safer removal of bone in lacrimal surgery to the development of complex image guidance technology for sinus and orbital surgery. Detailed discussion of syndromic and non-syndromic congenital anomalies explore a variety of surgical techniques and the nuances of applying these approaches in the management of various structural abnormalites. Further important advances include new analytic laboratory techniques, which can illuminate the genetic basis of many pediatric oculoplastic disorders, various medical management advances such as the role of beta blockers in the treatment of facial and orbital hemangiomas, and the development of biologic pathway blockers inhibiting tumor growth which offer real potential for reducing the necessity of surgical intervention.
