A sobering account of a disenfranchised American working class and important policy solutions to the nation’s economic inequalities One of the country’s leading scholars on economics and social policy, Isabel Sawhill addresses the enormous divisions in American society—economic, cultural, and political—and what might be done to bridge them. Widening inequality and the loss of jobs to trade and technology has left a significant portion of the American workforce disenfranchised and skeptical of governments and corporations alike. And yet both have a role to play in improving the country for all. Sawhill argues for a policy agenda based on mainstream values, such as family, education, and work. While many have lost faith in government programs designed to help them, there are still trusted institutions on both the local and federal level that can deliver better job opportunities and higher wages to those who have been left behind. At the same time, the private sector needs to reexamine how it trains and rewards employees. This book provides a clear-headed and middle-way path to a better-functioning society in which personal responsibility is honored and inclusive capitalism and more broadly shared growth are once more the norm.

From the author of Bowling Alone and Our Kids, a “sweeping yet remarkably accessible” (The Wall Street Journal) analysis that “offers superb, often counterintuitive insights” (The New York Times) to demonstrate how we have gone from an individualistic “I” society to a more communitarian “We” society and then back again, and how we can learn from that experience to become a stronger, more unified nation. Deep and accelerating inequality; unprecedented political polarization; vitriolic public discourse; a fraying social fabric; public and private narcissism—Americans today seem to agree on only one thing: This is the worst of times. But we’ve been here before. During the Gilded Age of the late 1800s, America was highly individualistic, starkly unequal, fiercely polarized, and deeply fragmented, just as it is today. However as the twentieth century opened, America became—slowly, unevenly, but steadily—more egalitarian, more cooperative, more generous; a society on the upswing, more focused on our responsibilities to one another and less focused on our narrower self-interest. Sometime during the 1960s, however, these trends reversed, leaving us in today’s disarray. In a sweeping overview of more than a century of history, drawing on his inimitable combination of statistical analysis and storytelling, Robert Putnam analyzes a remarkable confluence of trends that brought us from an “I” society to a “We” society and then back again. He draws inspiring lessons for our time from an earlier era, when a dedicated group of reformers righted the ship, putting us on a path to becoming a society once again based on community. Engaging, revelatory, and timely, this is Putnam’s most ambitious work yet, a fitting capstone to a brilliant career.

Introduction Donald Trump once said he was troubled by President Obama's high standing among African Americans, suggesting he probably wouldn't get support from Black voters that he believes he deserves. "I have a great relationship with the Blacks. I've always had a great relationship with the Blacks," Trump said on Talk 1300 AM radio in Albany, N.Y. Trump was considering running for President in 2012. He was responding to host Fred Dicker's reference to a recent Quinnipiac Poll showing Obama enjoys strong support from African Americans in New York State. That survey showed 95% of Blacks in New York backing Obama. The Real Estate mogul said the numbers were "frightening." Maybe if Trump runs and win in 2016 he might be a blessing for the Black race. It's understanding why Obama is so popular among Blacks. He is the first person with Negro blood in him to become President. That is the number one reason he is so popular with African Americans. He can't make life better for them. Obama only showed them, no matter what your background you can become President of the United States. Life is a hard struggle for most people in the United States the same thing goes for Sports. Fortunate Blacks have the upper hand on other races because of their toughness and endurance it take to play Sports. However, when most Blacks succeed, they forget where they came from and don't look back and help the unfortunate ones except their mother. Because most never had a father there for them. Maybe Donald Trump, if he become President will motivate young Blacks to be productive, obey the Law, be honest and blame no one and achieve their full potential goal in life. Trump is about business and you must contribute to this Society if you want to be successful. The Jury is still out on Trump. I am willing to give him a chance. Our Country is on a downhill decline. Maybe Trump will make America great again. Therlee Gipson

We the People have the power to help define policies and actions that can guide us to the most wonderful future. The public and private sectors must step up with ideas to help fulfill the destiny of this wonderful future. The purpose of this book is to help achieve this destiny, while helping create and support meaningful domestic jobs today that enable people to live more purposeful lives tomorrow. This book serves as a roadmap to achieve these ideals based on one of the most successful National States the world has ever seen, with roots that extend over 2,000 years of survival, self-sustainability, wisdom, compassion, and faith through even the most difficult circumstances. Using this model as a guide, this book defines specific policy and actions, ways of thinking, and methods of communication that can make these ideals a reality. Why is it relatively short? Because the purpose is to define tangible solutions and actions, not to glorify ourselves, and not to fool people with excess writing that nobody can understand. In a 1-day read, this book provides a clear path to help Make America Great Again.
