If a believer is born from above, is it not logical then that the believer should return there as often as he or she desires or is able? If the believer is seated in the heavenlies, does it not call forth a need to understand what the heavens looks like? I began very early in my journey to ask for understanding of how heaven is structured and also to seek for a language on how to narrate my experiences. These experiences are the results of my travel to the heavens through the person of Jesus who is the way and door to enter those realms of heaven. To me, the primary purpose of the coming of Jesus into the world is to open the gates and the door to the heavenly dimension, for me and for all of humanity. The true message of Christianity then is that the door to the heavens has opened to all who, by their freewill, choose to believe the Messiah whom God has sent in the Person of Yeshua (Jesus) HaMashiach (The Christ).In my journey towards understanding who I am in the Father through the Son, Jesus Christ, I have had many experiences whose examination and analysis, instead of proffering final solutions to intractable spiritual questions, has rather fueled more burning questions. So rather than offer you a final answer to your questions about the heavens, I hope this book spurs you to ask more questions and to press into the heavens and to search the Scriptures to find more of what the Father has for us as God's Children. As Sons of God, access to the Heavenly dimensions is our inheritance. Unfortunately, we have not been taught on such important matters by current church culture. The study of midrash—the biblical exegesis, parables, and anecdotes of the Rabbis—has enjoyed a renaissance in recent years. Most recent scholarship, however, has focused on the aggadic or narrative midrash, while halakhic or legal midrash—the exegesis of biblical law—has received relatively little attention. In Scripture as Logos, Azzan Yadin addresses this long-standing need, examining early, tannaitic (70-200 C.E.) legal midrash, focusing on the interpretive tradition associated with the figure of Rabbi Ishmael. This is a sophisticated study of midrashic hermeneutics, growing out of the observation that the Rabbi Ishmael midrashim contain a dual personification of Scripture, which is referred to as both "torah" and "ha-katuv." It is Yadin's significant contribution to note that the two terms are not in fact synonymous but rather serve as metonymies for Sinai on the one hand and, on the other, the rabbinic house of study, the bet midrash. Yadin develops this insight, ultimately presenting the complex but highly coherent interpretive ideology that underlies these rabbinic texts, an ideology that—contrary to the dominant view today—seeks to minimize the role of the rabbinic reader by presenting Scripture as actively self-interpretive. Moving beyond textual analysis, Yadin then locates the Rabbi Ishmael hermeneutic within the religious landscape of Second Temple and post-Temple literature. The result is a series of surprising connections between these rabbinic texts and Wisdom literature, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the Church Fathers, all of which lead to a radical rethinking of the origins of rabbinic midrash and, indeed, of the Rabbis as a whole.
