Results on soft and hard diffraction obtained by the CDF Collaboration at the Fermilab Tevatron {bar p}p Collider are reviewed with emphasis on aspects of the data that point to the underlying QCD mechanism for diffraction. The results are interpreted in terms of a phenomenological approach in which diffraction is due to an exchange of low-x partons subject to color constraints.

Preliminary results on jet production with rapidity gaps in p{anti p} collisions are presented for both D0 and CDF. An excess of events with a forward rapidity gap is observed at both (square root)s=1800 GeV and 630 GeV, consistent with a hard single diffractive process. The first evidence for diffractive W production is presented. A class of events with two forward gaps and central dijets is observed at (square root)s=1800 GeV, a topology that is consistent with hard double pomeron exchange. Kinematic properties of events containing rapidity gaps are measured.

We use a Monte Carlo implementation of recently developed models of inclusive and exclusive diffractive W, top, Higgs and stop productions to assess the sensitivity of the LHC experiments. We also discuss how the Tevatron experiments could test the models and measure the gluon density in the pomeron, which is needed to make precise predictions at the LHC.

Results on hard diffraction from CDF are reviewed and compared with predictions based on the diffractive structure function of the proton measured in deep inelastic scattering at HERA. The predictions are generally larger than the measured rates by a factor of (approximately) 6, suggesting a breakdown of conventional factorization. Correct predictions are obtained by scaling the rapidity gap probability distribution of the diffractive structure function to the total integrated gap probability. The scaling of the gap probability is traced back to the pomeron flux renormalization hypothesis, which was introduced to unitarize the soft diffraction amplitude.

Results on diffractive particle interactions from the Fermilab Tevatron {bar p}p collider are placed in perspective through a QCD inspired phenomenological approach, which exploits scaling and factorization properties observed in data. Hard diffraction in events with dijets and rapidity gaps has been studied by D0 and CDF for three processes: hard color singlet exchange, hard single diffraction, and hard double pomeron exchange, using Tevatron [anti p]p data at [radical]s = 630 GeV and 1.8 TeV. Measurements of rates, [eta], E[sub T] and [radical]s dependencies are presented and comparisons made with predictions of several models.
