The Handwriting Heroes Program (HHP) is designed for school-based occupational therapists (OTs) for the implementation of structured interventions to promote the development of handwriting legibility. The interventions are intended for children with identified handwriting weaknesses. The HHP uses evidence-based research to describe the components of the manual, develop accompanying resources to the program, and determine interventions within the program's treatment sessions. This evidence also supports the rationale behind the development of the program, including how the program relates to the Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSS). This paper discusses the theoretical design of the HHP using relevant models of practice, such as the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO). It also outlines frames of references, guidelines, and frameworks within the description of the program, including those provided by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). This paper describes the pracitce implications, implementation, and future implications for school-based OTs to advance occupational therapy (OT) practice skills for the development of occupational performance in a child's education.

Left-handedness has been connected to many different conditions, traits, and abilities. This is especially true for pathological syndromes, such as schizophrenia, along with learning disabilities and autism. The published research on handedness is vast and frequently contradictory, often raising more questions than providing answers. Questions such as: Is handedness genetic? Can handedness be changed? Are there consequences to training someone to switch handedness? Are there positive traits associated with left-handedness like creativity? Are there negative traits associated with left-handedness like trouble reading maps? Is it abnormal to do some things right-handed and other things left-handed? Are the brains of left-handers different from the brains of right-handers? Laterality: Exploring the Enigma of Left-Handedness examines the research conducted over the past 50 years with special emphasis on twenty-first century research on handedness and translates this literature into an accessible and readable form. Each chapter is based on a question or questions covering diverse topics such as genetic and biological origins of handedness, familial and hormonal influences on handedness, and the effects of a majority right-handed world on the behaviors of left-handers. Summarizes scientific research on laterality Separates fact from fiction in common beliefs about laterality Includes illustrative interviews with left-handers

Handedness is a multidimensional phenomenon co-determined by polygenetic and developmental aspects, multifactorial influences and in some cases, pathological impact. It is important for professionals working with children, including those who are still undecided about their writing hand, to assess, analyse and understand the complexity of handedness comprehensively to prevent problems related to switched or atypical handedness. Beyond Left and Right Handedness uses a practice-based approach to handedness and systematically integrates theory, research and practice. Part I, ‘Theory and Research,’ critically evaluates and utilises the broad spectrum of the handedness literature as a theoretical basis for the development of handedness instruments. Part II, ‘Assessment and Analysis,’ presents diagnostic and analytical instruments developed by the author based on numerous in-depth studies and extensive clinical practice over 20 years. These include the Handedness Profile, a standardised assessment of various handedness dimensions; and the Handedness Typology, an analytical framework to interpret different types of handedness. Part III, ‘Implications for Practice,’ contains detailed case studies on assessment and treatment by professionals working with children presenting with unclear and/or atypical handedness. “This book provides the reader with a comprehensive and scholarly discussion of the topic, presenting a careful, in-depth description of all aspects of the topic and providing professionals with the necessary, evidence-based tools to address handedness in practice. It is an invaluable resource that is well situated in the latest evidence-based understanding of handedness and provides a comprehensive guide to addressing the important development of handedness.” - Prof. Dr. Helen Polatajko
