Excerpt from Handbook to the History of the Hebrew Monarchy, Vol. 1 of 2 This volume contains a series of thirty-one lessons, which are intended to illustrate the rise of the Hebrew monarchy from the birth of Samuel to the accession of Solomon, a period of more than a century and a half (1170-1015 ec). The lessons are based chiefly on the two books of Samuel, with selections from 1 Chronicles and the beginning of 1 Kings. As far as possible the text is printed continuously, the exceptions con sisting (l) Of some rearrangements of verses or chapters in order to illustrate a particular subject; (2) of omissions of matter which was not thought suitable for the teacher's purpose. Where such omissions have been made, a short summary of the subject matter has been given. The books of Samuel and Kings are evidently compiled from materials left by Samuel himself and other eminent prophets of Israel. The prophets were the national historians, and the Jews counted these books as belonging to the prophetical writings. The larger portion of them must have been compiled before the Captivity (see note on 1 Sam. Xxvii. Though it is, of course, unknown at what exact date, or under whose hand, they assumed their present shape. Excerpt from Handbook to the History of the Hebrew Monarchy, Vol. 2: From the Accession of Solomon to the Captivity of Judah The same general principles have been followed in the notes and lessons in this volume as in the previous one, which ended with the accession of Solomon. The reader is referred to the Introduction Of that volume for a summary Of the sources of the history, and of the main ideas which should be our guide in teaching it. In this volume the Books of Chronicles have largely been made use Of. In many cases they add incidents and details which are not found in the Books of the Kings, while in some cases their narrative is simpler and more concise, and so better fitted for the comprehension of children. Excerpt from A History of the Hebrew Monarchy To avoid any mystery, and prevent future misconception, I will say plainly that I hold in my hands a letter from the late Editor of the North British Review, which fixes on the late Archbishop Whately the responsibility of a certain article, by which I was much aggrieved. But as it is not likely to be now read, I am glad to say no more about it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Excerpt from The Parallel History of the Jewish Monarchy, Vol. 1: Printed in the Text of the Revised Version 1885; The Reigns of David and Solomon, 1 Samuel 31 to 1 Kings 11, 1 Chronicles 10 to 2 Chronicles 9 I trust the book may be serviceable even to advanced Students, who wish to collate for themselves the two authorities; but it is intended primarily for use in Schools. The difficulty Of following the history in two sometimes concurrent and sometimes divergent authorities, both bound up in the same Bible - and often in very small type - is apt to drive boys to Compendiums and Manuals, ' in which a clear narrative is given, but the dignity and beauty of the original are entirely lost. By te-arranging the text I hope to have made the study of this part of the Bible easier and more attractive. I wish to express my gratitude to the Joint Committee of the Univer sities Of Oxford and Cambridge for leave to print the text of the Revised Version. To Professor Driver, for most readily and kindly allowing me to reprint, as an Introduction, a passage from his Literature of the Old Testament, ' my warmest thanks are due. Excerpt from The Parallel History of the Jewish Monarchy, Vol. 2: The Divided Monarchy; 1 Kings 12 to 2 Kings 25, 2 Chronicles 10-36 HE history of the Jewish Monarchy, as given in the Old Testament, is embodied in two narratives, compiled at different times and from different points of view. In the following pages they are combined. When two accounts of the same event are given, they are printed in parallel columns, so as to admit of comparison. When only one account is given, it is printed across the page in the usual way. To facilitate the finding of any given reign, the names of the kings are printed in heavy type the first time they occur on a page.
