To be kind is more important than to be right. What people really need is not a brilliant mind but a special heart that listens. This book will not make me popular; quite the contrary. I have to believe that mankind is NOT born evil, but is taught to hate. Religion has taught who among us is worthy and not, thus dividing us with bigotry and judgment. I have to believe we come into this world pure and are simply 'taught' who we must hate. As a child my parents often wondered why, they didn't name me "Why...'" All the "blind faith", "Never question God" and "Because I said so" responses just made me question even more, because none of the answers made sense or could be proven.. Why can't I "question God", "God" is the only one that could answer my questions. Also, FYI, I was saved (profession of faith), baptized twice (I switched religions) and confirmed. Baptist and Episcopalian... So don't think I haven't been through the "Holy Routine". Plus vacation Bible school from birth to 12 years old and church three times a week from birth to 17, when I finally went to college. I never personally subscribed to another organized religion from that day forward.

Hallucinations, for most people, imply madness. But there are many different types of non-psychotic hallucination caused by various illnesses or injuries, by intoxication--even, for many people, by falling sleep. From the elementary geometrical shapes that we see when we rub our eyes to the complex swirls and blind spots and zigzags of a visual migraine, hallucination takes many forms. At a higher level, hallucinations associated with the altered states of consciousness that may come with sensory deprivation or certain brain disorders can lead to religious epiphanies or conversions. Drawing on a wealth of clinical examples from his own patients as well as historical and literary descriptions, Oliver Sacks investigates the fundamental differences and similarities of these many sorts of hallucinations, what they say about the organization and structure of our brains, how they have influenced every culture's folklore and art, and why the potential for hallucination is present in us all.

I was a fun-loving grandmother who would go out of my way to create wonderful memories and adventures for my grandchildren. Unfortunately, I suffered a very unexpected debilitating health crisis, and it took me a while to get back on my feet. I was thrilled when I was finally able to regain my independence and move into a new apartment. I was beginning to feel like my old self again until one fateful night when the unthinkable happened. I was too embarrassed to tell anyone because I was afraid that nobody would believe me. I felt totally alone and I was in my own private hell. I was terrified that my nightmare would never end. I knew that if someone very close to me told me this same story, I would feel confused and helpless about what to say or how to get them help. It was just one of those secrets that nobody would be able to keep. They would have to tell someone because if they didn't, something terrible could happen and someone could get seriously hurt or even worse. My secret was revealed late one night in the most humiliating way that I could have ever imagined. Every word of this unbelievable story is true, and I write about it in vivid detail because that is exactly how I remember it. The undying help and support from my children inspired me to share my story. I wanted to let other people who have gone through this know that they are not alone.

One of the most thorough, yet accessible, introductions to the Tibetan Buddhist worldview ever published The author presents complex and sophisticated teachings and practices in nontechnical language, using engaging stories and personal anecdotes to illustrate his points. Indestructible Truth presents Tibetan Buddhism in its traditional form but also shows how the Tibetan traditions are applicable to the problems and challenges of modern life in the West. In Indestructible Truth, Tibetan Buddhism is introduced not as an exotic religion, but rather as an expression of human spirituality that is having a profound impact on the modern world. In addition, it presents the point of view of meditation and the practice of the spiritual life, paying special attention to contemplative practice and meditation as taught in the Kagyu and Nyingma schools.
