Excerpt from Half-Hours With St. John's Epistles The similarity of the Epistle and the Gospel and their dissimilarity also will be seen when we study a passage in each containing the same fundamental truth: And this is life eternal, that they should know thee, the only true God, and him whoi'h thou didst send, even Jesus Christ. (john xvii. Here eternal life is the progressive recog nition of God through an increasing knowledge of His Son. The Gospel gives the historic revelation of God. But the Epistle goes further, And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding. Download The Gospel, Epistles, and Revelation of St. John Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from The Gospel, Epistles, and Revelation of St. John: Edited, With an Introduction and Notes The application of this principle to the present case seems to follow naturally from what has already been said. St. John's work is a gospel: accordingly, like the other gospels, it will be made up of the the Acts and Sayings of Jesus. But its prologue has set forth a very special pur pose for the narrative the support of a theological position. In accordance with this we find, as a fact, that the 'acts of Jesus become in St. John's narrative 'signs, ' and the 'sayings' are all of the nature of 'witness.' From this point of view the work falls into natural divisions: seven incidents constitute the Earlier Signs and Witness of Jesus, seven more his Signs and Witness to the Jews; four divisions comprise the Signs and Witness among his own Disciples, and the three phases of the final Passion and Resurrection history may again be treated as Signs and Witness. Download The Epistles of St. John (Classic Reprint) Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from The Epistles of St. John An exposition of St. John's Epistles by the present writer was announced, as one of a series of such expositions, in 1900. This was to have been a revision of lectures actually delivered in Westminster Abbey, but it was never accomplished. And now that I am taking advantage of some recovered leisure to publish the intended exposition, I have not gone back upon the reports of former lectures. The present exposition is entirely new. Both in the introduction and in the exposition itself I have had in view especially the ordinary man and woman who lack the equipment and knowledge of a scholar, and I have tried to take no knowledge for granted that an ordinary education does not supply. Excerpt from The First Epistle General of St. John: A Devotional Commentary Each of these embodies not merely the ripest results of scholarship, but, what is even more valuable in the interpretation of St. John's writings, a profoundly spiritual apprehension of the teaching of the beloved disciple. Download The Two St. Johns of the New Testament (Classic Reprint) Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from The Two St. Johns of the New Testament Although the influence of a natural relationship may have entered into the Saviour's predilection for this disciple, this circumstance could have had no weight at all unless there had been in St. John qualities to support the claim of kinship. But he was one formed by nature to be loved. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download The Expositor's Bible Book in PDF, ePub and Kindle
Excerpt from The Expositor's Bible: The Epistles of St. John Since that period I have frequently turned again to these Epistles - subsequent reflection or study not seldom filling in gaps in my knowledge, or leading me to modify former interpretations. When invited last year to resume my Old work, I therefore embraced willingly the opportunity which was presented to me.
