A world of dew And within every dewdrop A world of struggle The iconic three-line haiku form is increasingly popular today as people embrace its simplicity and grace--and its connections to the Japanese ethos of mindfulness and minimalism. Say more with fewer words. This practical guide by poet and teacher Bruce Ross shows you how to capture a fleeting moment, like painting a picture with words, and how to give voice to your innermost thoughts, feelings, and observations. You don't have to be a practiced poet or writer to write your own haiku, and this book shows you how. In this book, aspiring poets will find: Accessible, easy-to-replicate examples and writing prompts A foreword that looks at the state of haiku today as the form continues to expand worldwide An introduction to related Japanese haiku forms such as tanka, haiga, renga, haibun, and senryu A listing of international journals and online resources Do you want to tell a story? Give haibun a try. Maybe you want to express a fleeting feeling? A tanka is the perfect vehicle. Are you more visual than verbal? Then a haiga, or illustrated haiku, is the ideal match. Finally, a renga is perfect as a group project or to create with friends, passing a poem around, adding line after line, and seeing what your group effort amounts to. Ross walks readers through the history and form of haiku, before laying out what sets each Japanese poetic form apart. Then it's time to turn to your notebook and start drafting some verse of your own!

Blink of a Duck's Eye is a collection of Tom Bierovic's haiku, senryu, and tanka poetry, beautifully illustrated with black and white photos, sketches, and woodcuts. Haiku focus on a specific moment (usually in Nature) that catches the poet's attention and that sparks an imaginative leap of recognition and connection - a haiku moment. Although most haiku written in English were traditionally composed of 17 syllables, divided into three lines of five, seven, and five syllables, contemporary haiku are presented in one, two, three, or four lines, and most are shorter than 17 syllables. Here's one of Tom Bierovic's haiku (Runner-up in the British Haiku Society's awards for 2019 and published in Blithe Spirit, 2020): melting iciclea sparrow showersdrip by drip David Lanoue, one of the British Haiku Society's judges for its 2019 awards, wrote this commentary about the poem: The 'melting icicle' haiku is exquisite in its observation and suggestiveness of feeling. One drip at a time, the sparrow patiently showers: shaking its head (I imagine), ruffling its feathers, and then waiting for more. I imagine that it is also waiting for springtime heat and the resurgence of life that the melting of winter ice betokens. I sense such warmth, compassion, and camaraderie (Issa-like!) for the little bird. Another form of poetry in Blink of a Duck's Eye is senryu (similar to haiku in structure but focusing more on human nature than Nature itself). Here's one of Tom's senryu (published in Under the Basho, 2020): the sign saysnarrow road aheadtalk radio The third type of poem in this collection is tanka (an older form of Japanese poetry, usually written in five lines). Tom's five-line poems can also be called quintain or tanshi to differentiate them from traditional tanka. Here's one of Tom's tanka (quintain/tanshi) published in One Sentence Poems, April, 2020: knowingwhat I knowa spider webin the moonlightstill shimmers The haiku, senryu, and tanka in Blink of a Duck's Eye have earned their place among the finest contemporary short poems. Readers will discover much to enjoy and reflect upon in this engaging, well-crafted collection. About the Author Tom Bierovic (M.Ed., M.Div.) is a widely published and award-winning poet. His work has appeared most recently (2019-20) in The Bamboo Hut, Haiku Dialogue, Haiku Universe, hedgerow, Luca's Lily Pad, Mainichi, One Sentence Poems, tinywords, Under the Basho, and Wales Haiku Journal. Recent awards (2020) include two selections in the Golden Haiku Contest (Washington, D.C.) and Runner-up and Honorable Mention in the British Haiku Society's annual awards. In his free time, Tom enjoys reading, playing backgammon, playing Native American flutes and Irish whistles, and drumming on bongos and djembe. He and his wife Laurie make their home in DeLand, Florida.

Part I of "The Clay Jar" includes haiku and senryu poems written over the past 25 years. Many of the poems were originally published in "frogpond," the journal of the Haiku Society of America, as well as in other nationally and internationally recognized journals, magazines and anthologies. Part II includes haibun, a form of poetry which combines short prose and haiku. It is often used as a form of travel diary. The collected poems reflect the author's sense of irony and social conscience as she observes human relations and emotions, world events and the natural world. The poet's style aims for brevity, levity, a sense of immediacy and lightness.
