Como consecuencia del cambio cultural de la posmodernidad, los autores participan de la idea de que están emergiendo nuevas formas de práctica de actividades físico-deportivas. A las formas tradicionales se incorporan otras muchas posibilidades. La práctica deportiva posmoderna en plural, innovadora, creativa y dinámica. Toda esta amalgama de actividades y sentidos que actualmente tiene la práctica físico-deportiva confiere un nuevo marco de análisis que no puede ser explicado de forma simple y unitaria en cuanto a su naturaleza o función social. Por otro lado, todas estas transformaciones y cambios sociales también han afectado a los motivos por lo que las personas manifiestan realizar ejercicio físico de forma continuada. Para el investigador es necesario conocer y profundizar en estos cambios: indagar en los motivos de práctica que aluden los ciudadanos y como estos se relacionan, a su vez, con la variedad y heterogeneidad de prácticas deportivas que existen hoy día. De hecho, la motivación ha sido definida como una de las variables que pueden predecir la adherencia a la práctica de ejercicio físico. Al margen de las formas y hábitos de práctica física del ciudadano, el libro se hace eco de la evaluación que el ciudadano realiza del sistema deportivo de su ciudad y de la conveniencia de la financiación pública de deporte profesional. El libro es redactado de una forma clara, directa y sencilla, sin renunciar por ello a mostrar los resultados obtenidos en relación con diferentes perspectivas que se manejen en ámbitos más académicos. La investigación recogida en el presente libro es fruto de un contrato de investigación entre la Universidad de Almería y el Patronato de Municipal de Deportes. Los autores de la publicación pertenecen al grupo de investigación "Contextos en el aprendizaje escolar en educación física y hábitos de de salud (HUM-628)" de la Universidad de Almería que coordina el Dr. Álvaro Sicilia Camacho y cuya producción se desarrolla en torno a tres principales líneas de investigación: La actividad física desde un punto de vista de la salud y la educación; la motivación hacia la práctica de actividad física; y el análisis de esta práctica en la transición de sociedades modernas a posmodernas.

La salud es, probablemente, una de las temáticas de mayor sensibilización social en el momento actual. La preocupación por la misma se debe al aumento incesante de enfermedades hipocinéticas, derivadas de un estilo de vida donde predomina el sedentarismo, el estrés, la alimentación inadecuada, el consumo de tabaco, alcohol, medicamentos y otras drogas, etc. Todas estas circunstancias pueden ser modificables o prevenidas con una correcta educación para la salud, fundamentalmente desde la infancia y adolescencia, por ser éstas las edades más significativas en cuanto a la adquisición de hábitos de vida relacionados con la salud. No hay lugar a la duda en cuanto a los numerosos efectos positivos del ejercicio físico moderado y controlado para la mejora de la calidad de vida, verdadera preocupación social y sanitaria. Además, debido al evento deportivo que se nos aproxima en nuestro contexto (Juegos Mediterráneos Almería 2005), es sumamente importante conocer los hábitos deportivos y el estilo de vida de toda la juventud de nuestra ciudad, con vistas a desarrollar campañas de formación, educación y concienciación ciudadana con respecto a la promoción del deporte para todos y a la utilización de la actividad físicodeportiva como una fuente de diversión y catarsis en el tiempo libre de los jóvenes almerienses. Por todo ello, creemos de máxima importancia el conocimiento de los resultados de esta investigación por parte de las instituciones y de la sociedad almeriense.

Offering a fresh, revisionist analysis of Spanish fiction from 1900 to 1940, this study examines the work of both men and women writers and how they practiced differing forms of modernism. As Roberta Johnson notes, Spanish male novelists emphasized technical and verbal innovation in representing the contents of an individual consciousness and thus were more modernist in the usual understanding of the term. Female writers, on the other hand, were less aesthetically innovative but engaged in a social modernism that focused on domestic issues, gender roles, and relations between the sexes. Compared to the more conventional--even reactionary--ways their male counterparts treated such matters, Spanish women's fiction in the first half of the twentieth century was often revolutionary. The book begins by tracing the history of public discourse on gender from the 1890s through the 1930s, a discourse that included the rise of feminism. Each chapter then analyzes works by female and male novelists that address key issues related to gender and nationalism: the concept of intrahistoria, or an essential Spanish soul; modernist uses of figures from the Spanish literary tradition, notably Don Quixote and Don Juan; biological theories of gender prevalent in the 1920s and 1930s; and the growth of an organized feminist movement that coincided with the burgeoning Republican movement. This is the first book dealing with this period of Spanish literature to consider women novelists, such as Maria Martinez Sierra, Carmen de Burgos, and Concha Espina, alongside canonical male novelists, including Miguel de Unamuno, Ramon del Valle-Inclan, and Pio Baroja. With its contrasting conceptions of modernism, Johnson's work provides a compelling new model for bridging the gender divide in the study of Spanish fiction.
