The Ozark faunal region of Missouri and Arkansas harbors a high level of aquatic biological diversity, especially in regards to endemic crayfish. Orconectes eupunctus, Orconectes marchandi, and Cambarus hubbsi are three such endemics that are threatened by a limited natural distribution and the invasions of Orconectes neglectus. I sought to determine how natural and anthropogenic factors influence these three species across multiple spatial scales. Local and landscape data were used in decision tree analyses (CART) to determine their influence effect on presence/absence and density of the three species. Predictive models were validated using k-fold cross validation. O. eupunctus presence was positively associated with factors related to stream size, current velocity, and spring discharge. Orconectes marchandi presence was predicted primarily by dolomite geology and water chemistry metrics, both of which may be related to spring flow volume. Cambarus hubbsi was associated with factors related to stream size and spring flow volume, with highest densities occurring in deep waters. Models predicting crayfish presence/absence consistently outperformed random models. Orconectes eupunctus was the rarest of the three species, occurring at only 9 sites. Orconectes marchandi was restricted to the Spring River drainage, and C. hubbsi was found in all three drainages. The models were effective in modeling rare crayfish species and the results were consistent with previous observations of the three species. Conservation attention may be necessary to protect groundwater resources and to safeguard against further invasions of O. neglectus.

Due to the ecological importance of crayfish and the increasing vulnerability of freshwater systems due to habitat loss, invasive species, and hydrologic alteration, understanding crayfish-environment relationships is crucial in the context of aquatic species conservation. I sought to examine the influence of hydrologic variation among intermittent and permanent streams on crayfish occupancy, abundance, predation risk, and potential vulnerability to invasive species effects. I conducted crayfish and environmental data sampling during two consecutive summers across 20 Ozark streams of differing permanence levels (10 intermittent, 10 permanent). In these same streams, I conducted fish and scat surveys over the course of four seasons. In addition, I performed population modeling based on previously collected data to understand the population dynamics of three crayfish species of greatest conservation need (Orconectes eupunctus, Orconectes marchandi, and Cambarus hubbsi) in the Spring River drainage of Arkansas and Missouri and assess their risk of invasive species and drought effects. I determined that occupancy of all crayfish species collected in my study was related to stream permanence. In most cases, crayfish abundance was largely related to stream permanence rather than local habitat. I documented that two species of conservation concern (i.e., Orconectes williamsi, Orconectes meeki) appear dependent on intermittent streams. Stream permanence, however, did not appear to influence crayfish predation by riparian mammals in my study. Crayfish predation pressure by mammals appeared to be determined by season and was strongest in spring and summer. The prevalence of fish prey in mammalian diets appeared to be strongly influenced by a season by stream permanence interaction, and this may be the first study to document such an observation. Lastly, my population modeling procedure indicated the potential of the Spring River to serve as a refuge for O. eupunctus and C. hubbsi when invasion and drought effects are strong in the surrounding area. Conversely, the Spring River appears to serve as a barrier to dispersal for O. marchandi which could result in high extinction risk of the population under invasive species effects. This thesis adds to the knowledge of flow-ecology relationships and invasive species effects in the Ozark Highlands.

Crayfish are one of the most iconic freshwater crustacean groups of the world. Humans have the ability to impact their environment more than any other animal on the planet. Our activities can alter the environment to the point that it is unsuitable to the native species resulting in a loss of biodiversity. Scientist now understand the importance of biodiversity and have begun to call for the conservation of vulnerable species. Species that are narrowly endemic are considered to be vulnerable because they use specific habitats that are highly susceptible to human disturbance. The components to species conservation are 1.) delineate the spatial distribution of the species, 2.) understand how the species interacts with its environment, and 3.) employ management strategies based on the ecology of the species. In this study, I investigated several crayfish species that are endemic to the Ouachita Mountains in Oklahoma and Arkansas. I established the spatial distributions of the crayfish using Maximum Entropy species distribution modeling. I then investigated crayfish habitat use with quantitative sampling and a movement study. Finally, I studied the ability of crayfish to burrow under different conditions. I found that crayfish distribution at the landscape scale is driven by climate, geology and elevation. In general, the crayfish in my study occurred above 300 m elevation where the geology was dominated by sandstone and shale, and rainfall totals were the highest. My quantitative data indicated that crayfish did not select for specific habitat types at the reach scale; however, crayfish appeared to use shallow and dry habitat even as streams dried. There was a lot of variability in the movement study but crayfish tended to burrow in response to drought. In my burrowing experiments I found that pebble substrate can restrict crayfish burrowing more than cobble substrate. I also found that fine sediment restricts crayfish burrowing ability regardless of substrate size. The combination of sedimentation and climate change is likely to have a negative impact on these crayfish.

"This book represents the most in-depth treatment of crayfishes for the state of Alabama to date. Alabama is currently known to host 99 species of crayfishes. The findings in this book are based on more than 9,000 records gathered from across the entire state. The authors collected specimens and data from all of Alabama's major and minor waterways and lakes, as well as specialized habitats such as burrows, roadside ditches, marshes, swamps, and temporary autumnal ponds. They visited all the major museums with holdings of crayfish specimens from Alabama, yielding a list of historical records including 4,259 specimen lots from approximately 2,200 unique locations. These records were used to build a database containing all available specimen metadata, including, but not limited to: species identification, number of individuals collected, location, date of collection, names of collectors, who identified the specimens, and the museum in which they are stored. Field work was conducted over a 14-year period during which a total of 4,487 specimen lots were collected and added to the database from approximately 2,600 unique locations sampled across Alabama. Prior to this book, no single comprehensive book or reference has ever been published on the crayfishes of Alabama. This book compiles 166 years of crayfish distributional and biological data for the 99 known Alabama species. It begins with chapters on the physiography and waterways of Alabama. One chapter discusses the general distributional patterns and habitat associations of Alabama crayfishes. Subsequent chapters discuss crayfish biology, ecology, conservation, and anatomy. The Louisville crayfish (Orconectes jeffersoni) is a poorly known member of the family Cambaridae. I conducted qualitative and quantitative surveys from 2007-2010 throughout Kentucky and southern Indiana, USA, in order to better define the range of the species, characterize its habitat requirements, assess its conservation status, and determine population densities in selected streams. I used a General Linear Model (GLM) Univariate Analysis of Variance to test if O. jeffersoni partitions macrohabitat (riffle, run, and pool) by size and a Chi Square test of independence to determine if O. jeffersoni partitions macrohabitat by gender. During qualitative sampling events, O. jeffersoni was found to be restricted to first to third order streams flowing through uplands experiencing varying degrees of urban influence in Bullitt, Hardin, Jefferson, and Oldham Counties, Kentucky. Orconectes jeffersoni density was found to be 1.23 (±1.81) individuals/0.25m2 over all quantitative sites. No significant difference in O. jeffersoni density was observed among flow regimes (riffle, run, and pool). There was a significant relationship between stream substrate and O. jeffersoni density. Additionally, O. jeffersoni did not seem to partition microhabitat based upon size or gender. The results of this study indicate that O. jeffersoni is a habitat generalist, and that it is restricted to a small geographic range; possibly due to a natural barrier to travel represented by the Ohio River. This study serves to assist natural resource professionals with the management and conservation of the Louisville crayfish.
