Ushers and greeters—ministers of hospitality—are vital to parishes so they need strong formation to comfortably and graciously respond to the needs of everyone who comes through the doors of your church. Solid training helps them become models of hospitality for the whole parish. This guide helps you train new and returning ministers of hospitality by providing knowledge, skills, and attitudes that are practical, theologically and liturgically-informed, and spiritually inspiring. With its new title, design, and added content, this revised edition is more helpful than ever. To Fr. Paul Turner’s foundational chapters on the meaning and history of the ministry and on the ministry’s spiritual dimensions, a brief chapter on the liturgy by liturgist Corinna Laughlin has been added. To Karie Ferrell’s practical and wise advice on the many detailed duties of the ministry, psychiatrist and spiritual director Thomas Welch has contributed some additional perspectives. Updates to frequently asked questions, the annotated list of recommended resources, and the glossary have added yet more value to the book, and questions for reflection and discussion continue to accompany each chapter. Let this guide help you open wide the doors of your church so that it can be, as Pope Francis has called for, a spiritual field hospital for our needy world. This guide includes: Theological and historical reflections on the liturgy and the ministry; Practical skill-building and advice for serving in this role; Ways to deepen your spirituality and call to discipleship; Answers to frequently asked questions; Recommended resources; A glossary; Questions for discussion and reflection

I started writing this book in 1994. That was the year the LORD graciously commissioned me to raise for Him Quality leaders. I started with Ministers' and Pastors' workshop. Training for ushers was the second assignment I handled among the three fold mandates the LORD gave me in 1994. But, no book was written by me back then, neither did I come across any specialized book on Ushers, Greeters and Protocols in one volume, 20 years ago. I have been privileged to conduct Training courses across the length and breadth of Nigeria on Ushering ministry for 20 years. I have interacted with over 400 churches from over 280 denominations in conferences and seminars but I never wrote a book on this topic. Our outfit, Christian Leadership Skills, have been involved in mass training for ushers in churches that counted 120,000 on Sundays with Ushers' workforce of about 4,000. I have written 36 books todate, but none on Ushers, Protocol and Greeters until now. A particular mega church invited us to deliver training for ushers and crowd controllers twice within three months in their headquarters church. Their invitation came a bit late I could not be there physically. I didn't have a book on Ushers or crowd control. Only a manual. Churches get confused on the role of ushers as different from protocol officers. I have witnessed ushers and protocols fight for territories in churches. A particular church head usher insists that he must stay side by side with the protocol officer by the altar, very close to the anointed. There was no book to show where each belong. A particular ministry scrapped the word "Ushers" from the list of ministries. The General Overseer banned the entire ushers from officiating in the length and breadth of the church. His reason? Brethren have the Holy Spirit to direct them. No need for Ushers and the church went on "smoothly thereafter". I had no book to give to the man of God. No book I could give, until 20 years later! Who are Ushers? Who are Protocol officers? Who are Greeters? Who are Traffic Controllers? I didn't write any book to explain. I only explain during workshop session. Now the explanation has become handy.

What is an usher? He is the can do, will do, go-to guy for his pastor during the services at his church. He sets aside his personal desires to serve his pastor, the congregation, and the guests in attendance. He is the smile and extended hand of welcome as you enter the doors to his church. He's the guy ready with the answers to your questions or he knows where to get the answers. The professional manner in which he conducts himself creates a smooth and seamless worship experience for all those in his building. He's the watchman at the gate, keeping an eye out for dangers. He has a plan for when unforeseen circumstances arise. He is prepared to act decisively when called upon. He's the man who will show you to your seat and is entrusted to take up the offering. The decision to write this booklet came from the careful study of the somewhat-antiquated handout I have been giving my new ushers to read when they begin their role as an usher at our church. I ordered several more books on the subject to search for a book that embodied everything I wanted to instill in my team of ushers, but my search came up lacking. While these handouts and books were great literature, they did not quite offer the depth that I was looking to give to my ushers. Through this search, I found some to be more ritual than helpful, while others were very heavy on the theology of ushering and church boards but less practical. I wanted something practical and more to the point of how to deal with everyday circumstances in the role of an usher. I wanted to find a book that speaks more directly to the reader. Since my search result came up empty, I decided to write one myself. I approach this subject from over twenty years of ushering experience and thirteen years as a head usher. I also draw from my twenty-five years of working in industrial construction as what is called a Millwright and, for a time, as an Ironworker. During most of my time working in construction, I was the foreman on the job. Years later, I would take from these experiences and apply them in my role being the head usher of my church. After more than twenty years of being involved with various ministries in my church, all the while being a greeter and an usher, I can tell you that in my opinion and experience, being a greeter or being an usher is one of the most important ministries you can take part in at your church. Being an usher and/or a greeter is very rewarding and brings a substantial amount of joy if you approach it the right way. It can also be frustrating, heartbreaking, and at times, very intense.I have been the head usher in my church since 2007. I'm in charge of ushering, greeting, and security. I get to see many aspects of the ministry from various perspectives, and I will touch on all three areas in this book.My life verse is Psalms 84:10. It reminds me, every day, of where I want to be in my life and why I do what I do. "For a day in Thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness." Psalms 84:10 KJV

The celebration of the Eucharist is the heart of the Church. Participating in this sacrament enables the Catholic faithful to encounter the presence, love, and mercy of Christ. Because this sacrament is so important, the Church provides the option for lay ministers to distribute the Body and Blood of Christ when there is not enough priests and deacons available to do so; Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion are also deputed for ministry at Mass and for the needs of the sick, the homebound, and the dying. This third edition has been updated with enhanced content and features. As part of the Liturgical Ministry Series®, this book is grounded in Church doctrine and liturgical practice and follows a format that provides newly formed and experienced ministers with basic skills and theological insights in order to perform their ministry well and in a Christ-like manner. This resource includes: Theological and historical reflections on the liturgy and the ministry; Practical skill-building and advice for serving in this role; Ways to deepen your spirituality and call to discipleship; Answers to frequently asked questions; Recommended resources; A glossary; Questions for discussion and reflection

All Christians are responsible for consoling those who have lost a loved one. An active parish bereavement ministry involves many parishioners performing various forms of compassionate service. In Guide for Forming a Parish Bereavement Ministry, author Robert Valle guides parish leaders toward creating a bereavement ministry that flows from the liturgical and pastoral vision of the Church’s official funeral rites. He explains the theology and key pastoral insights of the Order of Christian Funerals (OCF) and outlines the phases of bereavement ministry, from accompanying the bereaved at the time of death to the preparation of the funeral liturgies, then home visits and acts of compassion throughout the following year. This resource provides practical advice and downloadable materials for training ministers in the theological, spiritual, and human dimensions essential for effective bereavement ministry. Contributing author Paula Kosin provides scripts and other editable downloads for facilitating a grief support group. Guide for Forming a Parish Bereavement Ministry—together with An Introduction to Bereavement Ministry: Caring for Those Who Mourn, a resource for bereavement ministers and Grieving: A Spiritual Process for Catholics, a book for the grieving—provide the training, insight, and guidance for forming a parish bereavement ministry that will bring comfort and peace to all in your community who are grieving the loss of a loved one.
