Excerpt from Group Tests of Intelligence There is an Old proverb which says that an ounce of mother wit is worth a pound of clergy, wit being the old English word for intelligence, and clergy the Old English word for learning. And examiners have always been under the reproach of being unable to separate the wit from the clergy they cannot tell us how much of a candidate's success at an examination is due to good brains and how much is due to good opportunities. It is the business of mental tests to remove this reproach. For it is the business of mental tests to extract the element of wit from the compound of wit and clergy. That they do their work imperfectly is readily admitted; but they are doing it better every day; and so important is the task that it is better to do it badly than not to do it at all. There are people who think Otherwise, people who believe that it is better not to do it at all. They say that mental testing is an attempt to bring exactitude into a realm which is essentially vague and indeterminate. They seek refuge in the plea that teaching is not a science, but an art; that the teacher is not a theorist dealing with abstractions, but a craftsman whose workshop is the classroom and whose material is the plastic mind of childhood. But they find no real refuge there; for they are there exposed to the charge of refusing to learn about the material on which they exercise their craft. No other craftsman is so indifferent, or being indifferent would care to confess it. The weaver is curious about his staple and the potter about his clay; for the wares they turn out are in accord with the materials on which they work. And nobody would think of blaming the weaver who failed to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, or the potter who failed to make a porcelain vase out of a lump of common clay. Indeed he would blame them for trying. And yet it is not so very long ago that the results of teaching little children were all measured by the same scale, and paid for at the same rate, in total disregard of those children's natural gifts. Silk purses and porcelain vases were expected everywhere. The parable of the talents was read on Sundays and forgotten on week-days. Applied to the classroom the parable means that the critic - even if that critic be the teacher himself or the pupil himself - cannot justly judge the fruit of the teacher's labours Without taking 1nto account the fertility Of the field m which he works. Excerpt from Manual of Directions for Giving and Scoring the Dearborn Group Tests of Intelligence: Series I, General Examinations 1, 2 and 3, for Grades I to III The room teachers may then assist by entering the names and birthdays, etc. (see page but should not give any other assistance during the progress of the tests. A good plan to follow, after a careful study of the directions, is to jot down on a copy of the tests the chief facts to be kept in mind. This record may be quickly referred to as needed during the progress of the tests. When the directions are read from the manual there is apt to be a loss of spontaneity in the giving of the tests, and con fusion and delay in looking from the manual to the test sheets. When the tests are given for the first time by an examiner, it is often well to try them out on a small group of children from some other grade a sixth grade) than those it is desired to test, and then to begin the testing with a third grade, since any lack of familiar ity with the directions will not cause as much difficulty as in the lower grades. In the first grade the tests should usually be given in three different periods, or an interval of at least ten minutes for change and recreationshould intervene between general examinations Nos. I and 2 and between Nos. 2 and 3. In the second and third grades the tests may be given in two periods with a short interval between them. As is indicated by the title page, it is best that pupils regard these exercises as in the nature of games and puzzles rather than as some new form of examination. They should be encouraged to play the games as well as they can. While the tests are being given the room teacher should be asked to copy from the register upon the accompanying record sheet the alphabetical list of her pupils with the birthday of each one 1912 - 11 and keep this list with the test sheets for the room. After the papers have been collected, she should examine them to see that all names are legibly written, and should enter the date of birthday again in the appropriate place on the title page of each set of tests. In giving the directions the examiner 'should hold a copy of the test sheet before the class, and in pointing to the place where the pupils are to write or draw (see, for example, the first test sheet), make sure that the pupils on his extreme right and left, as well as those in the rear rows, see where he is pointing. Excerpt from Intelligence Tests and School Reorganization This book is in no sense an inventory of the important experiments now going on in the United States in connection with the use of intelligence and educational tests. Such an inventory would have required entirely too much space and would have involved an amount of repetition which could not have been other than tedious. Instead, experiments have been selected which are typical of the leading methods of readjustment now being attempted in different parts of the country. All of them illustrate important types of procedure, but involve varying degrees of generality. At one extreme is the Oakland plan, described by Dr. Dickson, which affects the entire school enrollment and the entire administrative system. At the other is the work of Dr. Fernald, which concerns itself primarily with individual cases of maladjustment and has to do with pedagogical method rather than school organization. Between these extremes is the Los Angeles work, described by Dr. Sutherland. The latter, although originally intended to meet the needs of individual misfits, has resulted in the working out of methods of individual instruction which appear to have applicability with children in general. The chapter by Dr. Franzen illustrates in a most interesting way how the results of intelligence and educational tests can be combined so as to serve as a better basis for rating the performance of pupils and the efficiency of schools. The chapter by Superintendent Tupper shows how much can be done, even in a small city and without elaborate reorganization, to improve the classification of children.
