Ground water is one of the most valuable and abundant natural resources of Louisiana. Of the 4.4 million people who live in the State, 61 percent use ground water as a source for drinking water. Most industrial and rural users and half of the irrigation users in the State rely on ground water. Quantity, however, is not the only aspect that makes ground water so valuable; quality also is important for its use. In most areas, little or no water treatment is required for drinking water and industrial purposes.

Sabine Parish, in the Tertiary uplands of northwestern Louisiana, has limited amounts of ground water and surface water available for current and future demands. The principal water problems in the parish pertain to water supply for industrial expansion and municipalities, flood control, drainage, irrigation, navigation, pollution, and salt contamination. The town of Many depends on ground water for its source, and some consideration has been given to the possibility of developing an additional supply from streams. Several nearby streams hold promise of an adequate supply of satisfactory quality with development. Bayou Negreet has been pumped dry by those using water for irrigation. The main problem in the use of water from the Sabine River is one of distribution--to make the water available to the more remote areas. Toledo Bend Reservoir will help alleviate this problem by creating a large reservoir which will be within easy reach of most principal communities in the parish. There are potential pollution problems from occasional releases of oil-field brine.
