Excerpt from Griffing's Tree and Plant Book, 1929 Do not use unrotted stable manure or compost fertilizer when trees are planted. A few pounds of bone meal or a few shovelfuls of well-rotted stable manure can be used at the bottom of the hole with good results at the time trees are planted. Best results with unrotted manure are attained by using it as a mulch, after the trees are planted. Commercial fertilizer should be used when trees start-to bud out. It is applied by digging a trench around the tree or plant, a few inches past the end of the newly planted roots. Then fill trench to cover the fertilizer. Excerpt from Trees, Ornamental Plants, Golf and Lawn Grasses, Flower and Garden Seeds, Landscaping: Fall 1929-Spring 1930 The many wonderful creeping plants referred to as ground covers should not be considered merely as substitutes for lawns as they have a distinctive ornamental value and add charming touches of color, and beautiful garden effects used as borders, beds, planted in groups or enmasse as ground covers. They are drouth and heat resistant, thriving under conditions that make a lawn impossible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Drumm Seed and Floral Co., 1929 Owing to an ever-increasing demand for advice along the line of landscape work, we were, a few years ago, forced to add a landscape department to our business. That such a department was not added any too soon has been abundantly proven by the many calls and demands made upon us from our city and from surrounding cities and states as well. While it is usually very difficult to give, proper advice by mail without having seen the place to be beautified, yet it is possible to give many helpful hints, if the place has been fairly well described in letter of inquiry. Of course it is always better to send our experienced landscape architect right to the place. In our landscape department we have adopted and try our best to live up to the motto: What is worth doing at all is worth doing well. For that reason we employ none but the most efficient help, and our stock of trees, flowering shrubs, roses and plants is the very best that can be secured. We handle all the ornamental stock suit able to this part of the country, and we do not advise people to use any but the hardiest and the best. If you contemplate laying out a public park, beautify ing your own private grounds or planting a few things around your little cottage, do not fail to correspond with us and we will be pleased to give you all the information we can. We are perfectly well qualified to execute a large work and we do not despise the small business. We are landscape architects and as such we will be pleased to furnish you plans, estimate of cost, and plant ing list for your parkor home grounds. Excerpt from Fall Planting, 1929 Habits OF perennial plants All the plants included in this section come under the general heading of Hardy Herbaceous Perennials. It may be a little clearer, however, to say that this title describes a class of plants which live outdoors during Winter with little or no protection, producing foliage, flower stems, and blooms the following Summer. Beautiful perennial gardens are scarce Until hardy plants come into more general use, we cannot hope for the artistic. Interesting and beautiful gardens in this country that are found in the Old World. However, the individual beauty of most of the perennials is so great that the garden cannot fail to be interesting and lovable, if the cultural skill is such as to bring the plants to perfection. With the material offered in this list, the most beautiful and charming gardens can be made; gar dens that change their aspect with every changing season. Tree-ring dating (dendrochronology) is a method of scientific dating based on the analysis of tree-ring growth patterns. As author James Speer notes, trees are remarkable bioindicators. Although there are other scientific means of dating climatic and environmental events, dendrochronology provides the most reliable of all paleorecords. Dendrochronology can be applied to very old trees to provide long-term records of past temperature, rainfall, fire, insect outbreaks, landslides, hurricanes, and ice storms--to name only a few events. This comprehensive text addresses all of the subjects that a reader who is new to the field will need to know and will be a welcome reference for practitioners at all levels. It includes a history of the discipline, biological and ecological background, principles of the field, basic scientific information on the structure and growth of trees, the complete range of dendrochronology methods, and a full description of each of the relevant subdisciplines. Individual chapters address the composition of wood, methods of field and laboratory study, dendroarchaeology, dendroclimatology, dendroecology, dendrogeomorphology, and dendrochemistry. The book also provides thorough introductions to common computer programs and methods of statistical analysis. In the final chapter, the author describes "frontiers in dendrochronology," with an eye toward future directions in the field. He concludes with several useful appendixes, including a listing of tree and shrub species that have been used successfully by dendrochronologists. Throughout, photographs and illustrations visually represent the state of knowledge in the field.

This newly reissued debut book in the Rutgers University Press Classics Imprint is the story of the search for a rocket propellant which could be trusted to take man into space. This search was a hazardous enterprise carried out by rival labs who worked against the known laws of nature, with no guarantee of success or safety. Acclaimed scientist and sci-fi author John Drury Clark writes with irreverent and eyewitness immediacy about the development of the explosive fuels strong enough to negate the relentless restraints of gravity. The resulting volume is as much a memoir as a work of history, sharing a behind-the-scenes view of an enterprise which eventually took men to the moon, missiles to the planets, and satellites to outer space. A classic work in the history of science, and described as “a good book on rocket stuff…that’s a really fun one” by SpaceX founder Elon Musk, readers will want to get their hands on this influential classic, available for the first time in decades.
