These measures are intended to increase transport efficiency in the long term and provide guidance on how to make logistics more environmentally friendly. Globalization and the increasing number of transports have a negative impact on the environment. The environmental impact results primarily from the CO2 emissions caused in the process. However, the results also show that companies are willing to make their supply chain "greener" and take action accordingly. In the literature, some reasons are given why the implementation of green logistics is inevitable. As a conclusion, it can be seen that green logistics will play an important role in the future, as companies themselves want to act more sustainably.

Are there really noble goals behind this movement or is it more based on the improvement of their public image? The goal of this Bachelor thesis is to identify clearly if the measures of the logistics and transport sectors are just to improve their image or if they want to make a significant and real contribution to environmental protection. Furthermore, it will analyse if the implementation of these ecological strategies comes along with economic advantages. To be able to answer these questions, different exemplary “Green Logistics” concepts will be considered critically with a focus on the implementation of alleged environmentally friendly measures in the transport and logistics sector. In recent years, climate change and global warming were again and again big topics in politics, the economy and society. International debate about greenhouse gases as well as noise and fine dust pollution attracted considerable attention from the public. According to the report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), it is becoming obvious that the causes of climate change are the greenhouse gases. This has led to an increased awareness for environmental protection by the general public in relation to the importance for the current and the next generations. Due to various actions and events, for instance, the nuclear accident in Fukushima and flood disasters in central Europe, the topic of environmental protection has developed as an important element of human action. The essential reason for global warming is the way in which humans live their lives. In particular, in the western countries the way of life has changed drastically with the introduction of industrialization. Therefore, large quantities of coal, oil and gas are burned resulting in a large amount of carbon dioxide (CO2). That is why the industrialised countries have to carry such a big responsibility when it comes to protecting the environment.

These can be literally natural disasters, ambitious climate protection goals and tightened environmental legislation for companies. As freight transport is responsible for a significant proportion of man made CO2 emissions it needs to contribute heavily to accomplishing Kyoto Protocol CO2 reduction targets. Besides complying with legislation focusing on sustainable development of logistics can yield further advantages such as cost savings and enhanced reputation. This dissertation is about developing a green logistics strategy for Strubbe as a logistics service provider mainly concerned with freight transport. In terms of freight transport considering green strategies means focusing on managing carbon emissions. As managing without measuring is not possible the first step was calculating Strubbe ́s carbon footprint. The energy-based calculation approach revealed TTW emissions of 1,120.39 tonnes CO2e for 2012, equivalent to 0.057 kg CO2e per tkm. Even though this intensity figure is lower than default values it could still be reduced by applying carbon emission reduction measures. These measures needed to be applicable to a freight transport concerned small logistics service provider like Strubbe. The review of potential measures yielded five practically applicable options: use of biodiesel (36.27%), reduction of maximum speed to 80 km/h (2.33%), vertical collaboration (1.88%), aerodynamic profiling (1.7%) and reduction of engine idling (0.41%). Their resprective percentage carbon abatement potentials are displayed in brackets. Further analysis revealed following changes in operating cost, in other words abatement costs: use of biodiesel (+19.24%), reduction of maximum speed to 80 km/h (+3.33%), vertical collaboration (-1.88%), aerodynamic profiling (+0.05%), reduction of engine idling (-0.41%). Due to the highly competitive freight transport market it is recommended that the affected companies strive for weak sustainable development of their operations. Any increase of operating cost should be avoided. Thus only carbon reduction measures which decrease operating cost should be applied. Strubbe should implement all of the reviewed measures except the use of biodiesel.

Freight transport has increased by 31 per cent between 1995 and 2005. As the volume of world trade rises, the European Commission predicts a further 50 per cent increase by 2020. But the logistics sector faces a number of challenges. Besides globalisation, means supply chains have become longer and more complex, increasing traffic congestion and soaring fuel prices, the logistics industry faces public and state environmental concerns, such as air and water pollution, energy con- sumption or waste disposal. Studies show that transportation and logistics can account for up to 75 per cent of a business’s carbon footprint. National governments and the European Union have therefore introduced a number of measures to ‘green’ transport and in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Policy-makers and their policies and regulations on sustainable logistics are assumed to play a critical role in the future development of sustainable logistics. The key research questions are Q1: How do 3PL companies see their current corporate activity in terms of sustainable logistics dependent on governmental policies and regulations? Q2: To what extent do 3PL firms think that governmental policies and regulations are necessary in order to shift the industry towards more sustainability? Q3: How do 3PLs assess the role of subcontractors on this topic and how will the logistics market be influenced by policies on sustainable logistics? The selection of the sampling is based on the exploratory sample which helps to generate deep insights into new ideas and people’s expertise. In total, five logistics experts were questioned through telephone and face-to-face semi-structured interviews. All experts work in different leading transport and logistics firms in executive positions.
