Excerpt from The Great Revival of 1800 From the earliest history of the world these periods of revival have been distinguished by the visitation of our race with such judgments as would compel men to think of their fallen, Sinful, helpless, perishing condition; of the in finite power and offended justice of God; of the necessity of a propitiation and atonement for sin in such ways as He might Offer; and of the duties of repentance, submission, obedience, and preparation for an account before Him. They have been ages of wars, pestilence, earthquakes, sud den and vast changes in social order, signs or discoveries in the heavens. Strange to tell, these judgments have irri tated rather than humbled God's enemies, and produced crimes more outrageous, unbelief more determined, and re sistance and persecutions of God's most beloved and faith ful messengers and servants. Excerpt from The Great Republic The important action taken by the Continental Con gress in the passage of the Declaration of Independence was received with enthusiasm by the people of the newly created United States of America. On the 8th of July the independence of the country was proclaimed with great solemnity at Philadelphia, and welcomed by the people with the greatest exultation, artillery being fired, bonfires kindled, and other manifestations Of joy displayed. It was read to the army in New York on the 11th, and was received by them with wild acclamations. That evening the statue of King George, which had been erected in 1770, was dragged through the streets by a party of soi diers, and a resolution taken to convert into bullets the lead of which it was made. This riotous proceeding was severely rebuked by Washington. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Twentieth Century Revival: A Call to Prayer; Get Ready for the Great Awakening The following are a few of the many state ments of approval which have been sent to the author of this book commending this plan to pastors, Christian workers, and the Churches: Revivals are born and nourished in prayer. The only great awakenings the Church has ever known have been such as the above described. The formation of an Interdenominational Prayer Circle in America has my enthusiastic support. I have examined carefully the literature and am prepared to give it my thorough endorsement, and will use my utmost influence to form such Prayer Circles in connection with my meetings as may be possible. I know the author of the Prayer Circle, Rev. Henry B. Roller, who is himself a successful and honored evangelist. No greater movement could to-day be started than such as he indicates in his book. Excerpt from May We Hope for a Great Revival? Within the last twelve months the Church of Christ in America has been visited with an extraordinary quickening. For once the embankments by which religious matter is shutout from the channels of secular intelligence were broken in; and even daily papers teemed with accounts of revivals and conversions. This great event has not been without its effect upon ourselves. Aspirations after a similar work of grace which existed before have been awakened afresh. On every hand good men may be heard asking one another, May we hope for a great revival? Some, it is true, not less desirous of the extension of Christ's kingdom than others, shrink from the idea of a revival, lest it Should be attended with extravagance, and bring forth none but ephemeral fruits. Some months ago two Ministers of the Gospel met on the top of an omnibus within a few miles of this city. Their con versation soon turned upon the remarkable news weekly coming from the religious bodies of America; and one of them ex pressed a hope that we might witness something similar amongst ourselves. The other replied, I have no faith in revivals; they do not leave any permanent results. Many years ago in the city of E I witnessed what appeared for the time to be a very powerful revival, but in a little while all the fruit of it had passed away. In the city of E re joined his friend. Several years ago, - was it about the time of the first visitation of the cholera? He learned that it was. And all the fruits disappeared? Completely, was the reply. It's strange, he said, that in a distant mission field I knew two Missionaries, both of whom had been con verted in that revival. Excerpt from The Revival and After the Revival In the many-sided social kingdom, Where men live out the hidden mysteries of the soul in busi ness, in politics, in literature, we see the same al ternations, the swing from zeal to apathy, from apathy to zeal, from diligence to indolence, and back again to diligence. Fluctuation is the law of all human affairs. There are ups and downs in all things. Homes have them. Lovers learn to interpret them. The political history of every country is a history of decline and of revival. In all departments of trade revivals occur. Whether they are normal or abnormal, whether necessary steps in a universal progression or reao tions from a culpable neglect, the fact remains that every-where human nature is familiar with move ments known as revivals; and wise men recog nize, study, and utilize these phenomena that the greatest good may come out of them.
