The year 1929 was devastating for America. It was the beginning of the Great Depression, which led to our country’s economic collapse. The author, also born in 1929, lived through those challenging Depression years, experiencing firsthand the many adaptations and sacrifices needed to survive those trying times. Now some eighty-eight years later, the author looks back to review those key principles that helped folks survive those challenging 1930s. Although the times we are living in today are radically different than in those Depression years, the author holds to the belief that if these same key principles are followed by America’s working class today, they will be more successful in meeting the challenge of our ever-changing, complex society. This book offers some suggested guides that should aid today’s workers in achieving increased financial independence by following these same key principles, with grandpa’s retirement rocking chair as the goal!

This novel is based on fact. Though it is based on fact, this novel uses fictional events, places and characters. Parts of the novel are humorous, while other parts are exciting and interesting. I am attempting to follow the lives of my father’s parents, John and Elizabeth Taylor, from the time of the Civil War, their marriage, their lives and adventures in different states, their travels across the country by wagon train and their lives in Tacoma, Washington. My dear aunt told me stories many years ago. Some I remember and some I remember only parts of. She was a very young girl at the time and experienced many of these things. I learned many things by asking questions. When relatives and people learned that I was interested in writing a book of this nature, they came forward with letters and stories of their own that I was able to use. Grandpa John was a tailor and made his living this way. Later in years he became fascinated with the railroads and became an engineer. I found this book to be fascinating to write and wishing that I could have been there and lived in such times before the machine revolution changed the world.

Grandpa’s Soup tells a story for the pleasure, information, and entertainment of the reader. It is a narrative of the author’s memories of growing up in a tiny island village in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria in Africa. It was inspired by memories of his grandpa, who passed away while he was still very much in the formative years of his life. They are memories that he considers worth sharing because of the lasting impact they have had on his adult life. The author hopes that the book affords the reader a peek into Kalabari-Ijaw ethnography and culture while not losing its very essence, which is motivational—a motivation engendered by the seemingly innocuous acts of a grandfather that roundly impacted the life of his grandson. Also, he attempted to present the book in a simple prose format for easy readability by a wide range of audiences across cultures and demographics.

The stories were just to good to keep inside the family unit and the book(s) were soon passed around to friends. Shortly, strangers were calling for copies, many demanding that the book be published, so that they too might own a copy. Comments from some delighted readers "I couldn't put the book down. My wife couldn't understand why I wouldn't come to bed. She read the book and said that she absolutely understands why. She remarked that she laughed at the punch lines and eagerly anticipated the next scrape that Grandpa Ray might get into." "Grandpa Ray is a master storyteller!" "Pacing and cadence are effectively employed to make readers laugh at the punch lines." "Well-written, fun and easy-to-read, Grandp's memoir brims with love, humor and warmth.
