In the small southern town of Riversedge are people from different walks of life. None are rich or famous, perhaps rather ordinary, with the exception of Grandma who lives on Turner Street. The old woman is referred to as Grandma only because no one knows her name, not even the postman. She seemingly receives no mail, visitors or even the requirements to live, and it appears she needs nothing. She has no desire to talk to anyone and most people don't bother to talk to her. So why did she choose to live the life of a recluse? What is her secret? When Sally and Tom Lester move to Riversedge the mystery of Turner Street becomes more apparent. Sally struggles to befriend Grandma. This involves Grandma's front porch and her neighbors which causes suspense to increase. Slowly, as the mystery unravels we learn the unthinkable not only about Grandma but also her neighborhood and some of the residents.

A USA Today Bestseller! “Every now and then a new voice in fiction arrives to completely charm, entertain and remind us what matters. Viola Shipman is that voice and The Summer Cottage is that absolutely irresistible and necessary novel.” — New York Times Bestselling Author Dorothea Benton Frank From the bestselling author of The Charm Bracelet and The Recipe Box comes the perfect summer escape about the restorative power of family tradition, small-town community and the feel of sand between your toes Adie Lou Kruger’s ex never understood her affection for what her parents called their Cozy Cottage, the charming, ramshackle summer home—complete with its own set of rules for relaxing—that she’s inherited on Lake Michigan. But despite the fact she’s facing a broken marriage and empty nest, and middle age is looming in the distance, memories of happy childhoods on the beach give her reason for hope. She’s determined not to let her husband’s affair with a grad student reduce her to a cliché, or to waste one more minute in a career she doesn’t love, so it becomes clear what Adie Lou must do: rebuild her life and restore her cottage shingle by shingle, on her terms. But converting the beloved, weather-beaten structure into a bed-and-breakfast isn’t quite the efficient home-reno experience she’s seen on TV. Pushback from Saugatuck’s contentious preservation society, costly surprises and demanding guests were not part of the plan. But as the cottage comes back to life, Adie Lou does, too, finding support in unexpected places and a new love story on the horizon. One cottage rule at a time, Adie Lou reclaims her own strength, history and joy by rediscovering the magic in every sunset and sandcastle. Don't miss bestselling author Viola Shipman's enchanting new novel, FAMOUS IN A SMALL TOWN—a magical story about the family you’re born with, and the one you choose! Award-winning author of fiction and nonfiction Jewell Parker Rhodes is a master of her craft, under-standing how both real and imagined stories can serve as a pathway to enlightenment. Porch Stories is Rhodes's tribute to her beloved grandmother, a real account of the love she received and the lessons she learned. Jewell Parker Rhodes was left in the care of her father and his mother when her own mother abandoned the family. Grandmother Ernestine's house in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was home to four other grandchildren as well. And while its crumbling bricks, lack of air-conditioning, and neighborhood rodents meant that life was anything but easy, the family house was filled with love. Everyone on their street knew and loved Grandmother Ernestine; men would tip their hats and children would rush up for a hug any time she was outside. No one loved Grandmother Ernestine more than Jewell, who would pass up a movie with her cousins to sit outside on Ernestine's front stoop and listen to her stories and her words of comfort. Jewell would later move out West to live with her mother and father as they reattempted marriage. But that was a short-lived experience. Before long, she was back in the loving arms of her grandmother, whose wisdom and warmth gave all of her children the tools to overcome the ordinary and extraordinary challenges life brings. Porch Stories, described by Rhodes as "an intergenerational love song," is a loving tribute that is at once candid, courageous, and reverent -- a literary portrait of family love that readers from all walks of life can see in themselves.

Mrs. Julia Reid Paxton was a wonderfully gentlewoman who graciously accepted the challenge of writing a book with me which would say all those things to the children of the world that she was unable to say to children of her own. Her life was filled with the memories of missionary service in Cuba, then Florida, San Antonio, Texas working with Mexican-Americans, and her final year as a missionary was in Houma, Louisiana. Upon retiring from that service, she continued the same work on a daily basis with people in her hometown, Lake Charles, Louisiana where she was born at home and raised. Her activities included organizations in and outside her home church, First United Methodist Church on Broad St. Although she was born into a large family, she and her husband, W. W. Paxton, had no children of their own. Love delivered to all children she met filled that spot in her heart. Her own mother, Annie Henington Reid, was very religious and was the most influential presence in her life. Her father, Andrew Jackson Reid, the Chief of Police in Lake Charles, died of blood poisoning when she was twelve years old. The characters in this book are fictitious combinations of family, friends and imagination of this writer. The delicious taste of her imaginary life as my Grandma, only teased my appetite for more interviews with this colorful yet humble lady. Her outlook was perpetually optimistic and she never looked back for regrets. Not listening enough to others was her self criticism. According to her, this was very important in getting along with all people. Lake Charles was her home close to her church and life long friends until her death in 1999. Her inspiration was motivating and I truly miss our time together as I dedicate this beginning to her.
