In recent years, two significant trends have had a substantial impact on Canadian families. First, Canadian families have been dramatically altered by high rates of separation and divorce, declining fertility, greater popularity of alternative family arrangements such as cohabitation, and increasing involvement of women in paid labour. Second, changes occurring in the economy and the larger society have brought new pressures to bear on families. In Canada's Changing Families, editors Kevin McQuillan and Zenaida R. Ravenera explore how these developments have altered family life. Using data collected in recent surveys by Statistics Canada, contributors to this volume illustrate how transformed conditions in the labour market have forced families to alter their routines and the division of responsibilities within the household. At the same time, the government, striving to maintain or increase the competitive position of the economy, has moved to control spending, restrain taxes, and reduce deficits. The result has been new demands on the family to provide or supplement services that might otherwise be provided by the state. Canada's Changing Families is an eye-opening study and one of great contemporary relevance.

Canadian religious history has been written with relatively little reference to the role of women. Throughout the years, the church itself has intensified this problem by restricting the options of women -- excluding them from the most valued roles and positions. In the past, Christian women were obliged to find alternative avenues for the expression of their faith and, as a result, their experience has been unusually rich and varied. This pioneering anthology traces the history of Canadian women in the Roman Catholic, Anglican, and Protestant traditions from the early days through the 1960s. Seventeen Canadian scholars tell the stories of individuals who have worked in traditional and non-traditional roles, alone and as members of groups, both within and outside church structures. All of the articles present new or little-known material, relating the faith, determination, and inventiveness of women whose experience has so far been overlooked. The volume includes an introductory overview of women's church work as well as a comprehensive bibliography of papers and books published about women in the Christian church in Canada, both in English and French. The incorporation of feminist analysis and an emphasis on gender issues set this collection apart from all other studies of Canadian church history. A unique and valuable book, it not only fills a void in the chronicles of religion, it adds an important new dimension to Canadian history.

The theme of this volume, presented in honour of G.W.M. Harrison, whose academic contributions have enriched our perspective of Roman Crete, is change and transition, a topic that challenges some of the earlier approaches to Hellenistic and Roman Crete, and which presents a different perspective on historical events and archaeological evidence.

This patient-centered and case-based eBook is intended for health care professionals who use—or may decide to use—clinical hypnosis in their professional work with cancer patients. With a personalized and flexible navigation system stimulating learning, it provides direct access to patients’ experiences and to the comments and analyses of two specialists. Each case features an original full session video recording and a full transcript of the session of real patients experiencing hypnosis focused on self-regulation improvements, pain relief, palliation of symptoms, and hope enhancement in the face of advanced or terminal cancer illness. The reader is invited to use these recordings to examine and inform his/her own practice and is encouraged to do such examination in an active and alert learning state. He/she will find several ways of incorporating hypnotic modalities at several points of the illness trajectory and in different contexts of the treatment continuum. For example, hypnosis will be observed in settings such as busy oncology clinics and at bedside, as well as in the preparation and execution of medical and diagnostic procedures. Hypnotherapy addressing existential and spiritual issues will also be presented. This innovative eBook, by putting emphasis on clinical relevance, interactions, and skill acquisition through demonstration, provides a unique opportunity to identify hypnotic phenomena and to understand the necessary modifications of classical hypnotic strategies clinically relevant to illness progression and hospice care.
